ANGELCARE: Baby Monitors: A Registry Guide

It’s time to build your baby registry!

You’ve been eyeing the tiny onesies, the booties, the diapers, the mobiles, the hats, the cozy socks, the bouncers, the fuzzy toys, and they’re JUST. SO. CUTE. But when it comes to feeling reassured that your new little peanut is safe, it’s not about cute. For items like baby monitors, it’s important to do your homework and select the one that is right for you.

Did you know that 55% of moms of infants under 3 months claim to be “extremely worried” when their baby is sleeping? In fact, 93% of newborn parents report getting up 2 or more times per night to check on their baby while they are sleeping. Finding the right baby monitor can be tremendously helpful

There are hundreds of monitors on the market, and the choices can be overwhelming. Let’s start by breaking down the different types of monitors, and some of the various features among them:

Audio monitors consist of a transmitter + one or more parent units, and relay sounds from the nursery to the parent. These can be budget-friendly, but basically just tell you when baby is awake. Additional features may include:

  • Visual sound level indicator
  • Temperature display
  • Night light
  • Out of range indicator

Video monitors generally function the same way, but add a camera and video display. While this adds the benefit of being able to see baby, it still primarily serves to alert parents that baby is awake. Some of the more advanced features may include:

  • Two-way talk feature
  • Nursery Night vision
  • Wide-angle pan and zoom lens
  • Touch control parent unit

Movement monitors such as the Angelcare AC517 are a relatively new breed of monitors and can add a whole new dimension of reassurance for anxious parents. In addition to video, audio, and temperature features, these monitors boast a high-tech sensor pad that slips under the crib mattress and tracks subtle movements (like breathing), that audio and video monitors can’t—and it will sound an alarm if there is no movement after 20 seconds. This sophisticated family of monitors essentially checks on baby for you, all night long. That extra peace of mind can mean less worry and more sleep for new parents.

You’ve come a long way, baby.
Becoming a parent is inherently a time of unmatched joy, mixed with endless fatigue and second-guessing. Fortunately, baby monitors have advanced significantly since the days of the one-way sound monitors that emitted static and the neighbors’ phone calls, and they can be a valuable tool in providing much-needed reassurance. As a parent, you’ll never stop worrying. But with the advanced technology that’s available in products like the Angelcare Movement Monitor, you can worry a little less.
