Blog: 99 bottle options on the wall, 99 bottle options. Take one down, pass it around, still 98 bottle options on the wall.

I remember the first time I walked into Babies”R”Us after finding out I was expecting, I was excited to walk around with the little zapper and put all the latest and greatest gadgets and gizmos onto my registry.

I thought I would start with bottles, I mean how hard could it possibly be, it’s just a bottle – and with that thought came the end of my demise. I seriously thought it was going to be so easy, I’d go in, pick what I wanted and that would be that.  YA RIGHT!! Do you know how many choices there are? I proceeded to become so overwhelmed I ended up walking out without putting anything on my registry.

I mean there were short ones, tall ones, plastic ones, glass ones, ones that claimed to reduce colic, ones that claimed to have better flow, ones that were supposed to feel more like a mother’s breast, and so many different nipple styles I lost count. My baby wasn’t even born yet, how could I possibly choose a bottle that would work – and the truth is, I couldn’t.  It wasn’t until my son was born and we switched to a bottle and tried a few different brands and styles that we found what worked for us.

To help get you started here is a comparison of a few brands that I have tried:

NUK Bottles with Perfect Fit Nipples

The best feature of this bottle is by far the 1-piece Air System which is in place to help prevent and reduce colic, spit-up and gas. This makes bottle cleaning and maintenance a breeze.

The Perfect Fit nipple is designed to mimic the shape of a mother’s nipple during breastfeeding to promote proper tongue movement and jaw alignment and comes in two nipple sizes and three flow rates.
– Size 1: smaller nipple for babies 0-6 months with options for slow or medium flow
– Size 2: larger nipple for babies 6+ months and is fast flow

This bottle comes in cute designs which include an elephants, Mickey and Minnie Mouse and sea creatures.

Review:

I absolutely loved that it was a 1-piece air system to reduce colic, this saved me so much time when preparing or cleaning bottles. It was much more convenient than systems that required extra pieces to be inserted in the bottles to produce the same air flow and effects of reducing colic and spit-up.

The nipple seemed like a great idea and made complete sense in my mind, however my son struggled with the nipple and in the end this bottle didn’t end up working for us.  However, my son was also a baby that never took to breastfeeding and struggled with it to the point that we ended up switching solely to bottle feeding.

To do a little more research, I tried this bottle out with a friend’s baby who is both bottle and breastfeeding.  She took to this nipple much more naturally and seemed to do quite well with it.

So, if you are combination feeding your child or simply switching from breastfeeding to bottle feeding this may be a bottle that works well for you, but if your child struggled with breastfeeding as mine did, this may not be the best option for you.

munchkin LATCH

My favourite feature – the all-in-one anti-colic valve!  Not only does it help to reduce gas and colic and in turn fussiness, but it’s an all-in-system, meaning no extra pieces to keep track of or clean.

The better latch nipple system mimics the natural flow of a mother’s breast milk, which is said to help babies transition between breast and bottle and back.  The better latch nipple stretches like the breast helping your child latch correctly, pumps like a breast – pressure again the nipple releases milk as your baby sucks just like the breast, and lastly the nipple moves with your baby to provide a continuous latch to further reduce the symptoms of colic.

These bottles also come with pump adaptors that allow you to easily connect to most breast pumps which is an added bonus as it saves you from purchasing different bottles for your pumps.  You can simply pump your milk directly into the bottles you use to feed your baby!

Additionally, munchkin has a great gift set which includes 2 – 4oz Bottles with stage 1 slow flow nipples, 2 – 8oz bottles with stage 2 medium flow nipples, 1 deluxe bottle and valve brush, 1 newborn pacifier, 2 pump adaptors and 4 sealing discs for storing and freezing your breastmilk. This is excellent gift option or starter kit!

Review:

I love munchkin products, I’ve always found it to be great quality and style, and I found that held true for the LATCH bottles and gift set.

While my son did latch well initially with these bottles, I found he struggled with the fact the nipple moved, and in his struggle to keep sucking he managed to invert the nipple.  Again, as I thought this may have something to do with the fact that he never took to breastfeeding and so I again tested these bottles with a friend’s child.  Again, I found that a child that was breastfed did significantly better with the movement in the nipple that did my son.

The quality and durability of this product are excellent, however, I would recommend this particular bottle for those who have children that are or have done well with breastfeeding and suggest that those who have children who struggled with breastfeeding purchase only one bottle to try before committing to purchasing the entire gift set.

Dr. Browns Natural Flow Standard 4oz and 8oz Bottles

The Dr. Brown’s Natural Flow Standard bottles use a 2-piece internal vent system that is said to create vacuum-free feeding that is similar to breastfeeding and help reduce colic, spit-up, burping and gas. Further, this 2-piece vent systems does not allow air to mix with the breast milk or formula so oxidation is prevented, maintaining essential vitamins such as C, A and E.

Each bottle comes with 1 Level-One silicone nipple, two-piece patented internal vent system and a variety of colours including pink, blue and clear.

Additionally, Dr. Brown’s offers a wide variety of bottle options including, glass and wide neck that all offer the same 2-piece internal vent system so that you can find the right bottle option for you and your baby.

Review:

These bottles are durable, stand up to their claims of reducing colic and gas, and the nipples are smaller and more ridged as compared to the NUK or munchkin models mentioned above. There are also a variety of nipple flow options that range from preemie to 9+ months which is excellent as your child grows.

Perhaps the biggest shortcoming with this bottle is that the vent system is not an all-in-one vent system within the bottle.  Rather it is a 2-piece system that you insert in the bottle, which unfortunately does mean more pieces to keep track of and keep clean.

Overall, I found Dr. Brown’s bottles to be the best suited for my son. The smaller more ridged nipples are easier for him to latch to and the vent system seems to work well as we haven’t experienced too many gas fueled tantrums.  The slim design of the bottle also allows me to fit 3 bottles into our stroller travel cooler as opposed to the 2 bottles that fit with wider bottles.

My parent tip: try all the bottles you can before making a commitment to purchase your final selection. Register for and use all the items you get in samples and gift bags, and ask friends and family to try out bottles that they’ve been using.
