Blog: Baby Surveillance – Philips AVENT DECT Baby Monitor By »

January 20th, 2017

Do you ever look at all the gadgets and gizmos you have scattered around your house or in your vehicle and wonder how our parents, grandparents and great-grandparents before them all managed to raise children and keep them alive without the access to everything we have now?

I’ve had this moment plenty of times over the course of the almost 11 months since having Callum.  One because I hear a lot of “we didn’t have that back in our day” scenarios, and two because I can’t imagine not having everything we now have available to make child rearing just a little bit easier.

Let’s face it – keeping a tiny human alive and teaching them about the world is hard work.  I’ll take all the help I can get, thank you very much. I’ll take the monitors, the disposable diapers, teething rings, formula, baby wipes, advanced technology car seats, strollers and travel systems, and I’ll do it all with a big smile on my face as I say “thank you to whoever invented these things.”

I’m sure we could all get by without all of these things, and some still do prefer to use cloth diapers and forgo baby monitors, and that is perfectly fine – do what suits you and your family is my motto, I just prefer the comforts and convenience of these things.

Take for example baby monitors, there are numerous choices on the market.  There are ones that monitor your babies breathing, and the temperature of the nursery, there are video monitors and audio monitors, and ones that you can monitor through your phone, and you know what?  They are all good – you just have to know what your comfort level is and what you want the monitor to do for you.

I had the opportunity to try out the Philips Avent Audio Baby Monitor with DECT technology, and truth be told is a great audio monitor.  It features:

  • DECT technology which guarantees zero interference from other transmitting products such as other baby monitors, cordless phones and cell phones
  • Provides clear sound
  • Has a range of up to 900 feet
  • Parent unit is outlet or battery powered
  • 5 sound activated LED lights to show sound level
  • Comfort night light on the child unit

Though I am not a tech person and I don’t know how the DECT technology works, knowing that the monitor had this technology provided a certain level of comfort after hearing some of the horror stories about monitors being hacked or picking up audio from a neighbour (though these have mainly been monitors that are connected using WiFi).

As a consumer I had absolutely no complaints with this monitor, it’s easy to use, provided excellent sound clarity and had a sleek appearance; as a self-declared paranoid mom it didn’t quite meet my personal comfort level, simply because I prefer video monitors.

If you’ve read any of my other blogs you will know that I can let my mind and imagination get the best of me – I blame this on a few things such as National Geographic’s Deadliest Animals, the movie Strangers and Criminal Minds  (I should really just stop watching these types of things, but I don’t).

So when I hear Callum in the middle of the night I don’t think, “oh he’s probably hungry or wet,” no no my mind goes to, “oh my gosh a black widow spider is probably attacking him or someone is trying to take him,” – don’t worry I know my fears are irrational, and I know some of you are probably thinking, “OK so if these are your fears, why aren’t you just running in to save your baby, why do you need a video monitor?” and I’ll tell you why, it’s because I need to know if I am going to be running in wielding a bat to fend off the perpetrator, or if I’m waking Joe to go save our son from the spider, because as much as I love my son, my fear of spiders runs just a little deeper. KIDDING! Maybe. I don’t know. My fear of spiders is real, and soul bounding.

Anyways, enough about my fears, back to monitors, and here’s the short and long of it – the Philips Avent Audio Baby Monitor with DECT technology is an excellent monitor if you are looking for an audio monitor; but if you do share some of my irrational fears, because like me you decided to binge watch Criminal Minds on your maternity leave, I’d invest in a video monitor.

Cheers folks, happy monitoring!
