Blog: Feed me mom! I’m hungry: Munchkin Latch Bottle Review By »

September 2nd, 2016

When a baby is hungry there is no calming them… there is no reasoning with them to wait a minute while you warm up the bottle, and your head gets scrambled as the waves of cries that start rolling in. The last thing you need is the wrong bottle – to create even more havoc to the situation. I know this from experience, having a bottle where the nipple releases the milk too fast can cause the baby to spit up and get horrible gas pains – which can take up to an hour to relieve. I am not sure if this is the same with all babies, but I know this is the case with Ethan. He has a huge appetite, but also has a super sensitive tummy and gets gassy very easily.

Buying bottles for the first time can be very overwhelming. I remember walking down the bottle aisle at Babies“R”Us and just staring at all the different brands and a variety of bottles to choose from. This is like so many products in life, too many options and we can get lost in the marketing of it all. I think you really need to simplify when buying baby items – you could literally stand there for hours over-analyzing the different options. To decide, I figured that ultimately the baby will get fed from any bottle I chose, and that I can grab another bottle down the road if I find out Ethan has some specific needs.

I ended up picking up a brand that offered newborn nipples, but they turned out to be a disaster. I did not notice that they were a “medium flow” and they caused great distress when I used them with Ethan. Luckily, at the same time I was given the Munchkin Latch Bottle Starter Set MUNCHKIN LATCH Bottle Newborn Gift Set. This brand offered reduced gas and spit up and catered to symptoms of colic.  Ethan loved this bottle, it was a nice transition from the breast. He took to the bottle with no issues, then back to the breast. The bottles’ nipples are soft and move back and forth – this is supposed to simulate a real nipple, so this helps with latching. I noticed that Ethan does not break off these nipples. The stretchy nipple moves with him and I can see him compressing the nipple to get the amount of milk he wants. The milk comes out slow which is great for Ethan as he is able to get the slow flow he needs to keep his tummy settled. The bottle design is comfy to hold too and I love how the set came with a variety of sizing so I do not have to go out and get the next level. Though an excuse to go shopping is always nice!

The only negative thing I noticed was that the nipple can end up inverted during the feeding. I am not sure if this is just because Ethan is sucking too hard, or it has to do with the air suction design of the bottle (there is a valve at the bottom of the bottle which is supposed to help with colic)… but it does happen quite often and I have to stop feeding and adjust the nipple by opening up the bottle to let air in (this will pop the nipple back out).

Despite this, I still love this bottle and use it all the time. I take the nipple getting inverted as a sign to burp Ethan, so it really is not a big deal to stop feeding for a few minutes.

Another positive thing to note about this bottle brand is the soother that comes with the set. Now I was given a bunch of different brands of soothers at my showers, I have tried them all during those crazy cry fits, and the only one I can get Ethan interested in is the LATCH soother. It suctions perfectly to his face, the design wraps around his lips and he is able to keep a continuous sucking without the soother falling off.

Tip for new moms:

There is no set manual for babies. If there was, I would have used it as my bible and memorized all the verses! If you are sterilizing bottles by hand, buy a cheap pot, I have melted plastic on my pots during the sterilization process.
