Blog: Perfect Pairings – Avent Bottle Reviews By »

November 20th, 2016

I always thought people who could “talk” wines and how to pair them were so elegant and interesting. I always wanted to be one of those people, but instead, I am one of those people who can talk bottles with you… baby bottles that is! I am not sure how elegant bottle talking can be, but I know it will be helpful. I never saw myself as a bottle connoisseur, but I surely am becoming one, with all my wins and losses with different bottles I have tried, evaluating bottles is becoming a fine art for me. I can’t conclude that I only use one bottle brand, like a favourite wine. I do have my preferences, but alike to pairing your wine and your food, it’s the same with baby bottles. In my opinion it depends on what bottle “pairs” nicely with what situation I am. I like the angled bottles for feeding in the highchair (I have mentioned the Playtex line in prior blogs) and if it is a night time feeding I usually grab the Avent due to the great benefits it has to offer. There also have been bottle brands that I have tried that Ethan hates and that will happen with babies. I would suggest getting at least 2 different brands of bottles and do your own comparison to find out what works best for you and your baby. But hopefully my bottle reviews help you to narrow down where to start!

Avent Natural Bottle_RachelI was given a 3 pack set of Philips Avent Natural Bottles for 1month+ to review from Babies“R”Us. This set comes with 3 9oz bottles intended for babies around 1 month or above. I have noticed with all the bottle brands I have tried that nipples will come in age stages in which they are intended to be used for. When buying a bottle for your baby just keep this in mind. I honestly had NO idea that nipples had to be age appropriate, one of the many things I am learning about as a new mommy.

The age stages just refers to the milk flow, how fast the milk comes out of the nipple. The age stages may be just a reference, because Ethan is almost 5 months and he is doing very well on the 1 month nipple. Why change when you have a good thing going! But Avent does offer 3 month and 6 month nipples as well.

What I love about this bottle:

Well, to start off, the nipple has these unique comfort petals, which was created to keep the nipple flexible to prevent collapsing and ensure softness. What is collapsing? I have had this happen with other bottles I have tried, the nipple will invert. This NEVER happens with the Avent bottles, I have used them for a while now, and I have never had to stop feeding to fix the nipple. So the brand has found a way to prevent collapsing: Huge praise for Avent!

The nipple is also super wide versus a lot of other bottles I have used. Why does that matter? Well because the wide-shaped nipple makes it easy to combine breast and bottle feeding, easing the transition between the two. I can’t comment on the breast feeding part, but I do like how Ethan has no problem latching with this bottle. A side note – the bottle is very easy to clean due to the large nipple.

Ergonomic shape– Avent promotes that they created an extra comfortable shape that is easy to hold even for baby’s tiny hands- this is true! Ethan has started to want to explore holding his bottles on his own, and he is even trying to feed himself. I let him play around so he can learn how to do it himself. The Avent is the ONLY bottle he can currently get his hands around and is able to motion the bottle towards his mouth. There are many many misses of his mouth, but it is a proud mommy moment to see Ethan being able to do things for himself (at least wanting to try).

Anti Colic System: The bottle offers an innovated twin value which vents air into the bottle not baby’s tummy. I found no issues with Ethan getting gassy or having any spit up after this bottle use. I love using this bottle at night because the flow is perfect to accommodate a hungry baby who wants milk fast. This is my go to bottle for night feedings. Also, since the bottle is anti colic, I find it reduces gas, so I notice that Ethan will go to bed much smoother after using the Avent.

Cool Feature– Avent bottles have many nipples that can transition on all their bottles, you can even get sippy cup caps to attach to the bottles when baby is ready for self feeding.

Avent Bottles_Rachel

I also received a Philips Avent Natural Glass Bottle 1 month+ 8oz from Babies“R”Us that is worth some attention due to its great features!

Avent Natural Glass Bottle_RachelWhy use glass anyways? That was my initial thought. Well, glass offers some cool benefits but I think using glass will ultimately come down to a personal choice –there have been concerns of chemicals in the plastic bottles (I am no expert on this topic) but both glass and plastic Avent bottles promote being BPA free and with plastic bottles they will deteriorate over time, so you will eventually will have to replace them.

Material – is pharmaceutical grade glass made of borosilicate, also is recyclable

Heat and Thermal Shock Resistant: The bottle has the ability to be placed in fridge, heated or sterilized with no issues. I have sterilized this bottle many times in boiling water, it does not break nor crack. I have had plastic bottles melt on me (ooops) obviously this will not happen with a glass bottle.

The Avent Natural Glass Bottle uses the same nipples as the Avent Natural Plastic Bottles, everything is interchangeable from the same line of products (this one is from the natural line they also offer a classic line of products), so if you wanted to pick up an Avent Plastic And Avent Glass Bottle and decide for yourself which you prefer, the good thing is Avent nipples to work on both.

Downside: Heavier than the plastic bottles… just something to keep in mind if you are travelling. I wouldn’t hand this bottle over to Ethan right away, being glass and that it is heavier I would not want him to drop it on himself or the floor.

Tip for new moms:

I mentioned in a prior blog that I started feeding solids to Ethan. I found that at first it was hard to get him to open his mouth, and chew (swallow). These things need to be learned by baby, but a secret I found to getting Ethan to open his mouth, and chew (swallow) the cereal, was to mimic myself doing it! I would also do tons and tons of praise and excitement each time he would open his mouth and let me give him a small spoonful, it is amazing what positive encouragement can accomplish!
