Blog: The Ultimate in Car Seat Safety – Diono Rainer Convertible Car Seat By »

March 14th, 2017

As first time parents, the car seat was the single most stressful purchase Joe and I had to make.  Let’s face it, a vehicle can be one of the most dangerous places for any of us, and not necessarily because of anything we have any control over. In a split second, a patch of black ice can send you spinning into oncoming traffic, or any other number of related motor vehicle accidents or fender benders.

With a husband who is a volunteer firefighter and responds to these types of accident scenes, our awareness of car seat safety is heightened. Like all parents, we want nothing but the absolute best in safety.

We spent hours researching car seats, from travel systems, infant seats and convertible seats. We poured over hundreds of reviews, spoke with numerous sales associates, and even attended an event specific to car seats to speak with sales reps from companies including Diono, Britax and Clek.  In the end, we ended up choosing the Diono Rainer Convertible Car Seat.

As a family that drives the highway A LOT the safety features offered by the Diono Rainer model seriously impressed us:

  • Extra deep side walls and EPS foam that surrounds your child for added side impact protection
  • Extended rear-facing capabilities. Children can stay rear facing up to 50 lbs (22.7 kg)
  • 5 point harness
  • Steel frame and aluminum reinforced sides
  • Aluminum reinforced headrest with 12 height positions

Additional features that make the Diono Rainer the ultimate car seat:

It’s convertible! This car seat offers options for children from 5-120 lbs (2.3-54kg) and up to 57 inches (144 cm) tall.

– Rear-facings option for children 5-50 lbs.

– Forward-facing option for children 22-65 lbs.

– Booster seat option for children 50-120 lbs. or up to 57 inches tall.

SuperLATCH system makes this car seat easy to install. Note: Along with the instructions, you can watch YouTube videos for how to install the car seat which makes install a breeze.

It sits lower on the vehicle seat than most car seats. As I am not vertically gifted at 5’5, this made putting Callum into the seat in our truck so much easier.

Excellent for multiples – you can fit three across!

Easily cleaned! Fabric can be taken off easily and thrown right into the washing machine.

Uses memory foam padding to ensure maximum comfortable for your child.

It comes with a cup-holder for your child that is easily reached, making it great for road trips with older children.

Rated for 10 years from time of purchase.

It’s amazing to travel with. This car seat folds, making it super compact to travel with.  Additionally you can purchase the Diono car seat travel bag and use the adjustable straps to carry the car seat in either a backpack or duffel bag fashion.

While I love this car seat, there are some features that some may consider to be pitfalls:

It’s heavy. The steel frame makes this car seat one of the heaviest on the market, but it’s a small price to pay for the added safety the steel frame provides.

The harness straps are heavy, which provides for excellent safety, but makes them difficult to tighten. However, once they are tightened, they don’t move and stay securely in place.

Diono uses the SuperLATCH system instead of the Clicktight system for install, making install slightly more difficult.

I’m not someone who usually pushes their views on anyone (who am I kidding I review products – that’s exactly what I do) but I will for the Diono Rainer.  I absolutely love this car seat and recommend it to anyone looking for an all-in-one car seat, or looking to upgrade from their infant seat.  At $429.99 it may seem like a steep price to pay, but I promise you it is worth every penny.

Parent Tip:
If you can, attend a car seat demo day. These events are the perfect opportunity to ask questions, learn about the features of various car seats, compare different models, and test your top choices.

All companies have sales reps on-hand to show you how to install their car seat in your vehicle, and some even have demo sections that allow you to place your child in the car seat to see how they fit and gauge their comfort level.

This event was key for us, we tested numerous models in our vehicle and with Callum, and what we found was that some seats didn’t fit our vehicle, and some seats Callum simply did not like.  It gave us peace of mind being able to test drive the car seat before purchasing it. Let’s face it – this is an expensive purchase, and one your child is going to have to live with for up to 12 years, it’s best to try before you buy.
