Blog: Barricade Baby – Brica Wood and Steel Designer Gate Review By »

February 7th, 2017

Babies, they are logistical nightmares. When they are first born, they stay in one spot, they sleep a lot, they poop a lot, they are super cute and little. That pretty much sums it up. But then a time arrives, it happens at a different time for everyone. Maybe it’s during tummy time, maybe it’s in their crib after a nap, maybe it’s when they are on the floor with their play mat while you are having a conversation with your wife, and then you look up and they have disappeared, and are now somehow under the coffee table. That’s right, your baby can roll, and then after they roll, they crawl, and after they crawl, they pull up, then they cruise, then they take their first steps, and all the way along you learn that there a contingencies you need to put in place to keep your nice, but extremely baby-dangerous things, from harming them in some way.

With each stage things get rearranged on shelves, items get moved away from the edges of tables, eventually any surface that is 3 feet high or less is bare, including your weird looking Christmas tree with the decorations on only the top half.

And don’t forget the stairs, oh man, babies aren’t robot vacuums, in case you were wondering. There aren’t any sensors that stop them at the precipice of a flight of stairs and turn them around to safety. Though in the right fleece sleeper, they are pretty effective at cleaning your floors when crawling. Either way, you need to fortify those areas, and quite frankly, most of the options to do this are ugly, and not 100% effective. This is where the Brica Wood and Steel Designer Baby Gate comes in to play. First of all, it looks really sharp, the metal and wood are certainly more high end than any plastic gate. And I’ve never seen a roadblock set up with plastic. You can literally drive a truck into it and it won’t buckle. Granted, it’s a Little Tikes truck, but still, our daughter can get hauling in that thing, and the gate is all that stands between her and a quintessential Bonnie and Clyde moment. So again, very thankful it was there. It’s absolutely tremendous, it’s true.

We have had a couple of gates, some work with pressure (expand in the doorway until there is a tight fit) but if they take a good knock, they can be dislodged. The Wood and Steel Designer Gate can be sized for the doorway you are fixing it to, and then you just anchor in the connection points with screws. So it is going nowhere. Eventually when you disconnect it, it’s as simple as a little dap, sand, and white paint touch up to the door jamb. It also had a door built in, so you don’t need to treat it like a hurdle, which is nice. With some other gates, parents have to vault over them, but not so with this Brica gate. This gate is going to last, through all our kids for sure, and when we aren’t using it, we have a great group of friends that all share these baby essentials, from clothes, to toys, to safety gear, and this gate is going to keep more than a couple little noggins from bouncing down a flight of stairs.

Here’s how my wife told me it was time to get a gate. I received a text that said “so this just happened”, along with this video:

She had never even attempted the stairs before this, then one day, she was just all in, going for it. I’m just glad it started from the bottom. Up just seems easier than down to me.

So if you are looking for a baby gate that is high quality, looks great and can withstand a toddler on a truck at ramming speed, the Brica Wood and Steel Designer Baby Gate is definitely for you.
