Our baby boy Ethan is due any day now, and as I sit here waiting for his grand arrival, I realize how unprepared I am for what lies ahead! Someone once told me that becoming a parent you cannot really prepare for. I’ve tried to mentally and emotionally prepare… I’m a perfectionist by nature, and being a student of law my curiosity for answers makes me have to research everything. I realize that as much as a read, I really think I will just have to learn as I go and accept mistakes as an opportunity to grow.

I keep hearing people using the word “nesting” and I initially understood it to mean a mom-to-be buying baby items and ensuring the house is tidy for baby’s arrival. That was an understatement. You would be surprised to know that this also includes re-organizing your husband’s drawers, colour coding your tea-towels into piles, and ensuring all the house vases are symmetrical. You really do become OCD about your living space! My poor husband has also taken on a part-time job of being a handyman. Everything has to be perfect for the baby; no light bulb can be burnt out!

My favorite purchase so far has to be the crib we bought from Babies“R”Us: Baby Cache Windsor Lifetime Crib. The crib is stunning, with the Espresso finish it really is a statement piece in the room. I never anticipated how big the crib would be when we bought it! Plus, we also bought the matching dresser. When my husband went to pick up these items with a friend’s truck, little did they realize that it would take him hours to strap down the crib and dresser due to the oversized boxes the items come in.

Advice for first time parents on picking up large baby items yourself:

  • Never attempt to pick up more than 1 item at a time, especially if you are using a pick-up truck. We really should have rented a U-Haul as the boxes for these items are ridiculously huge
  • Bring straps, you will need them to keep these monstrous items in place (if you are using a pickup truck)
