Blog: Diono Rainier Convertible and Maxi Cosi Jool Convertible Car Seat Comparison Review By »

June 29th, 2016

How many people that you know have 2 car seats in their car, but only 1 child? Well I know one, hint, it’s me.

As I sit here and write this, my daughter protests bedtime from her crib. It’s 8:30 on a Monday night, give it 5 minutes and she will be sound asleep. It’s weird, but it seems like a roll of the dice lately at bed time. She either hits the sheets and is instantly out, or spends about 5-10 minutes protesting, then gives in and hits the hay. I guess that’s not really anything worth complaining about… She sleeps through the night and occasionally fights bedtime for 5 minutes. She has, however, figured out that when I break out her Bedtime Bible Promises book it means bedtime though, and tries to take off running down the hall. I might have to change up the bedtime reading material a little more often to keep her guessing. But I digress…

One thing that is always guaranteed to put her out like a light is a car ride. We rode around for awhile, for the purposes of being able to compare adequately, with 2 car seats in the back of our SUV. It proved to be a little too inconvenient as a long term solution, so we put one in my parents car, and it has proven to be a life saver.

I have a hard time saying anything bad about either the Diono Rainier or the Maxi Cosi. They are certainly different, but both are very popular models for a reason. One of my favourite things about the Maxi Cosi is the adjustable tilt angles. Initially when we put our daughter in it, we had it at more of an angle so that when she inevitably fell asleep in the car her head wouldn’t slump forward, and instead rested back comfortably. As her neck has gotten stronger, we have put it to the second of the three angles, so she is able to look out the window of the car better and watch the world go by, which she now LOVES.

Time check, it’s now been about 15 minutes. She is still chatting to herself, but not actively protesting the fact that she is in her crib. She just turned 16 months, and I hear her telling her bunny to “hot, hot, hot” (hop, hop, hop). It shouldn’t be long now.

Both my wife and I love that the Diono Rainier car seat is able to not only be both front and rear facing (both car seats are), but it can also be a booster seat once our little munchkin isn’t such a little munchkin anymore. It’s literally the only car seat you ever need (once you graduate from the bucket). That is worth it’s weight in gold. Let’s face it, baby stuff can be hella expensive, so any opportunity to get something that spans stages is huge.

Our daughter’s favourite thing to do in the Diono is to jam her hands up the sides so it looks like she is a football ref making a touchdown call, then fall asleep with them there. I don’t know why, but apparently it’s awesome and she finds it comfy.

Diono Car Seat

Both have the one click UAS connectors, which makes taking it in and out of the car super simple. I’m so glad that the days of McGivering a seatbelt around a car seat in order to safely affix it to your vehicle are done. The one thing that I have found frustrating on install is trying to get the straps tight enough to prevent the seat from moving around too much. Trying to kneel on the car seat and reef on the strap takes a little bit of gumption, but I find I just try and channel all my suppressed rage and it is generally enough to snug the seat in well enough. It also has the added benefit of stress relief, it’s pretty much the equivalent of 5 hours of golf in 5 minutes!

I no longer hear sounds coming from her bedroom, it was 30 minutes tonight, but no intervention was required, and she’s asleep. It looks like I’m in the clear. Sometimes I guess you just need to play for a little while before going to sleep.

The Maxi Cosi is definitely the cushier of the two. The fabric is super soft and it has this sweat wicking thing going on, so her little face doesn’t get all hot and sweaty when she conks out on long car rides. My wife enjoys this because it keeps her hair (which was just re-done 5 times while chasing her around the house before we left) from getting totally messed up and stuck to her face when we arrive where ever we’re headed. It’s sturdy and has a cup holder, which when she was smaller didn’t seem like a huge deal, but now that she is bigger, and has a sippy cup back there it is very useful. She knows just the spot that her sippy goes.

Maxi Cosi Seat

There is a notable size difference between the two. The Diono is a lot slimmer, and narrow, while the Maxi Cosi is a little larger.

It seems to me that, while both car seats are able to grow with your child, the Maxi Cosi is built best for smaller ages and the Diono is better suited as they get bigger. The Maxi Cosi‘s adjustable tilt angles allow an easier transition from the bucket seat, but the Diono‘s ability to convert into a booster chair means that it will be used for a long time.

In either case, we feel both car seats offer great safety features, and the price point is identical, so it really is a matter of personal preference. We feel very comfortable with our daughter riding in either seat, and that is the most important thing!
