EVENFLO: Explaining the ABCs of Safe Sleep

By: Sarah Haverstick, Safety Advocate, Evenflo

Bringing home your new infant can be overwhelming. Planning in advance for where they will sleep may help make the transition to home a little easier. The Canadian Paediatric Society provides many tips for safe sleep for babies – the following are a few of the key recommendations to help lower the risk of injury and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Just remember your ABCs.

1. Alone. Infants should sleep in their own space. Their sleep space should consist of a firm, flat sleeping surface and be free of any soft materials, like blankets, pillows, stuffed animals or crib bumpers which can create breathing hazards for baby.

2. Back. Place your baby on their back for all sleep – nap time and night time. Babies should be placed on their back until their first birthday. Once your baby can roll over on their own you do not need to reposition them to their back should they roll on to their belly.

3. Crib. The safest place for an infant to sleep is in a crib, bassinet or playard that meets current Canadian regulations. Additionally, infants who share a room with their caregiver have a lower risk of SIDS. Setting up a safe place for baby to sleep alone in your room is a great option for at least the child’s first 6 months of life, which is the highest risk period for SIDS.

Playards are a great option to help facilitate room sharing during those early months. The playard provides a safe, firm sleeping surface for the infant to sleep.
