EVENFLO FEEDING: What to Look for in a Breast Pump

By: Shari Criso MSN, RN, CNM, IBCLC

As an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, I’ve taught thousands of moms how to breastfeed and pump their breastmilk, as well as how to choose the right pump for their needs. Choosing the right breast pump is an important part of ensuring a successful breastfeeding journey.

Before you buy your breast pump, there are three important things to look for:

#1 – Safety and Hygiene

One of the most important features for you to look for when purchasing your breast pump is the ability for you to clean it, and have it stay clean.

All breast pumps come with either an open or a closed system. With a closed system, there is a barrier between your breastmilk and the tubing. This will prevent milk for entering your pump. With an open system, there is a direct opening between where the milk is passing into the bottle, and the tubing of the pump.

In other words, with an open system, there is a risk of bacteria, mold or viruses growing within the tube. Breastmilk can either splash or get sucked into the tubing, and even into the pump itself, where it cannot be fully cleaned out, and could contaminate your breastmilk. That’s why choosing a pump with a closed system is a good idea.

#2 – Available Flange Sizes

Another very important feature for you to look for in a breast pump is the option for multiple breast flange sizes.

The flanges are the cups that go over your breasts, and that come in direct contact with your body. These cups have different size holes. Different sizes are important, in order to fit your nipple properly. If the flange size is not the proper fit, you may have difficulty expressing your milk, and you may feel discomfort while pumping.

Of course, everyone has different size breast and nipples, and not one size will fit every mom. Even for the same mom, she may require several sizes of flanges throughout her pumping year, as her breasts change size and shape. Purchase a breast pump that gives you multiple flange size options, so you can ensure the proper fit.

#3 – Settings and Controls

Look for a pump that has two separate controls: one for suction, and one for speed. More settings, and the individual capability to control speed and suction, will give you the most customized experience while pumping. This will help you to maximize your breast milk production using the least amount of time.  A pump with 32 settings will be easier to use and more efficient than a pump with only 5 or even 15 settings.

While pumping, you are going to want to simulate your baby sucking as much as possible. Having control over both the speed and suction strength will allow you to be in control and make the whole experience easier, more efficient, and much more enjoyable for you.

The Evenflo Feeding Hospital Strength Advanced Double Electric Breast Pump

This pump has all the features you would look for in a double electric pump, and everything I’ve outlined so far. This pump includes:

  • PerfectlyPure closed system design that prevents milk backup to keep your pump clean and safe
  • AdvancedFit three-size flanges that come included with all models of the Advanced Double Electric Pump
  • AdvancedControl that allows you to independently adjust your suction and speed, along with 32 settings that make the pump completely customizable
  • PerfectPosition flanges for slouch-free pumping, preventing the back and neck pain that can happen with a flange that requires mom to lean forward.

The pump is lightweight, portable, and gives you the option of an AC adaptor, or AA batteries that insert directly into the back of the pump as well as integrated bottle holders that are not only convenient, but also protect your precious breast milk from any spills.

In the deluxe model, all the accessories that you will need to return to work and continue to pump and feed your baby are included, such as a large and stylish carrying bag, a cooler bag with freezer packs, and extra storage bottles.

In addition, all of the Evenflo Feeding Hospital Strength Double Electric breast pumps include free access to both of my award-winning, full-length online classes, Simply Breastfeeding and Breast Pumps and Briefcases so you can get the support and education you need to make breastfeeding and pumping successful and enjoyable for you and your baby.

When it comes time to pick a pump, make an informed choice, and don’t hesitate to reach out to an IBCLC or breastfeeding clinic if you have any problems. There are many people out there who would love to support you on your beautiful breastfeeding journey!
