Blog: Multi-Tasking Mommy: Evenflo Feeding Manual Breast Pump Review By »

September 12th, 2016

I am not sure how my expectations of a new mom on a maternity leave got so high – I assumed I would have all this “extra” time on my hands. I saw me trying new recipes and preparing elaborate meals for my husband and I. I had visions of my householIMG_6981d looking like a décor magazine, and oh learning a new language (I wanted to keep myself “busy” on my maternity leave).  This was so far from reality, I laugh about it now. I am lucky if I have time for a coffee  – so many times I have put Ethan down to “sleep” and ran to make a coffee… only to have it go cold because he is up 2 seconds later. This process of trying to have a coffee will last for hours, I finally resigned to the fact that I will not get anything accomplished, that making a plan or schedule for my day does not exist, and I’ll just have to endure these caffeine withdrawals.

Whoever said newborns sleep 14-17 hours a day has not met my son. He is bright eyed and alert for hours in the day. He just loves looking around and being involved in the world around him.

So anything that can offer me the ability to free up some time in my day is life saver. I got my hands on a Manual Breast Pump Evenflo Manual pumpby Evenflo, and this machine is wonderful. As I started feeling better I wanted to get out of the house, I would take Ethan to visit my parents. I would usually take my electric breast pump with me as I was producing a lot of milk in the beginning and Ethan wasn’t eating as much as I was producing. So, I would be using the pump to relieve and save milk. Being a Virgo, it is essential to be over prepared, for any occasion, so when it comes to taking Ethan out for the day, I probably have about 10 different outfits, 100 diapers, endless washcloths and wipes, plus a changing pad… my poor diaper bag is overflowing! On top of that carting around my electric pump and all the pieces was making me feel like a walking nursery! The manual pump has done wonders for space-saving, it is very small and lightweight. It is meant to be portable and offers a simple design that you can easily slip into your purse or diaper bag. The pieces resemble the Evenflo Double Electric Breast Pump, so I was able to assemble it with ease.

My only issue with the pump is that if you do not have it securely pressed against your breast, it will leak, the suction has to be tight for optimal milk collection.  I have used this pump and been able to do small tasks around my house at the same time, and what mommy doesn’t want the ability to multitask! We are superwomen after all and this machine just offers more mobility to do things (whereas the electric machine you are stuck in one place).

In terms of using the manual pump, I did make the mistake of pressing down on the pump handle all the way during my first use. This was unnecessary and painful. The suction it creates is very strong compared to the electric pump where you have the ability to start at a low suction. Essentially you have to do a trial and error to find the appropriate pump suction you want that does not cause discomfort. I found for myself that I only needed to press lightly with the handle to produce milk. I am not sure if this is personal or would apply to everyone who uses it, but my suggestion would be to press slowly and not all the way down during the first try.

I highly suggest this product for a mom on the go.

Baby on the move

I also tried the Evenflo Advanced Milk Storage Bag Adapters which were great! Before that I was just dumping the cEvenflo Advanced Milk Storage Bag Adaptersollection of bottles into bags, and this was messy. I thought there has to be an easier way to do this, especially when you’re tired and exhausted, the last thing you want to be doing is fiddling around trying to wrap the bags securely around the bottles.

The Adapters are so simple to use, you don’t even need to read the manual (finally 1 manual you don’t have to open up!). It’s pretty straightforward – you simply attach to the pump flange base and snap on the milk bags. The clasps to hold the milk bag in place seem very sturdy and the ridging in between the clasp and the plastic holds the bag nicely without slipping down. The adapter itself is small and lightweight; it is a great addition to add to your collection of breast pumping accessories.

Tip for new moms:

I find myself using ziplock bags for everything, they have become an essential item to my diaper bag: I place used bottles in there for cleaning later, I also place my serialized items in a separate bag, I have used them for dirty clothes and even for my manual pump to keep it clean and away from debris on my travels. The manual pump fits perfectly into the large freezer ziplock bags. I highly suggest a trip to the grocery store and stocking up on these!
