GRACO: Road-tripping with Kids in Tow

(NC) With the kids back in school, weekends quickly become filled with trips to the pumpkin patch, to see the fall colours, and to visit family. Regardless of the number of kilometres to your destination, the key to fun on the open road is planning enjoyable activities that will keep kids busy and parents happy.

Create a “Busy Bag.” If you haven’t heard of a busy bag, it’s one of the easiest parenting inventions for every type of family trip. Fill an old backpack or tote with simple activities for the kids. Keep the bag close so you can dole out colouring books with coloured pencils, small toys and games to prevent the kids from asking the dreaded, “Are we there yet?”

Choose the right gear. Kids bring a lot of stuff no matter where you travel, so make your trip easier with the right items. Pick a lightweight stroller that can be easily transported in and out of the car during pit stops, and a car seat that allows children to safely ride rear-facing longer. Try Graco®’s Extend2Fit® Convertible Car Seat, which features a four-position extension panel that provides five inches of extra legroom, allowing children to safely ride rear-facing longer. As every parent knows, the more comfortable kids are, the better.

Short pit stops. Another great idea for road trips is to plan some designated breaks. Maybe stop at a new local restaurant and dine out for lunch rather than drive-thru. These small pit stops can tucker the little ones out for a much-needed nap.
