Blog: Nothing to be nervous about: Evenflo Feeding Advanced Double Electric Breast Pump Review By »

September 13th, 2016

Bringing home Ethan was incredibly exciting, I was so proud of myself for handling my labour as well as I did, considering I had a few complications. I remember leaving the hospital thinking I did not know a person was capable of experiencing so much pain and joy at the same time. The hospital offers such amazing post-partum care and information – but once you realize you are now on your own – feelings of being overwhelmed do begin to set in. Once I got home I went through a huge emotional process.  I was physically exhausted from labour and in recovery mode. I remember trying not to cry as my hormones were completely out of whack. I was dealing with all these emotions but I realized that I had to put any feelings aside and get down to business and start caring for my new little bundle. I slowly learned that being a new mom meant that anything I was feeling emotionally or physically had to be pushed aside, I could not self-indulge in my pain and emotions, as he needed me. I never knew how strong I was capable of being! All I can say is that as the days went on those overwhelming feelings start to fade as you grow more confident in your new mommy role. You will still have tough days but they are nothing compared to the amount of love and joy you feel when you look at your new baby.

Everyone kept telling me what a great job I was doing, but deep down I was thinking I have no idea what I am doing! I do not think that once you become a parent that you immediately know what to do; I think you just love this little human being so much that you are willing to give it everything you got. I also learned that you have to be willing to forgive yourself when you feel that you just haven’t got it quite yet – it will be get easier, I promise.

Falling in love again

I had decided ahead of time I wanted to breastfeed.  I thought the bonding experience between mother and baby sounded wonderful – not to mention all the health benefits breastfeeding has to offer. Unfortunately breastfeeding did not come naturally to me. I felt very overwhelmed in the hospital; I thought I would just immediately know what to do, and that Ethan would as well. The nurses were wonderful in explaining to me that breastfeeding has to be learned, from both our ends, and I needed to be patient with myself.  I was greeted by many lactation consultants and nurses who informed me about the benefits of breastfeeding. Ontario health practitioners even called me after I was released to follow-up on how I was doing with caring for Ethan, how I was adjusting to parenthood, and expressed their willingness to answer any baby questions I had. I was assured once again that breastfeeding does not always come easy to everyone and encouraged to give it some time.

Ethan and I did get to a better place. I was regularly breastfeeding and next on the list was to take to pumping. Using a breast pump is extremely daunting at first; especially if you are a new mom and the idea of strapping your breasts into a machine seems barbaric. This was my initial feeling about pumping, but this really comes from a lack of knowledge and experience on my part.

Once I got the chance to use the Evenflo Feeding Advanced Double Electric Breast Pump I realized how EASY pumping can electric pumpbe, and there was nothing to be nervous about.

Firstly, when I opened the box I immediately told my husband I needed his help. The equipment looks intimidating to assemble, and there were a lot of pieces to work with. I should have just gone to the manual first, before I let myself get overwhelmed by the looks of things. Once I read the manual I realized I did not need my husband: it was so EASY to assemble! The manual is straightforward and everything is labelled and numbered, you really cannot go wrong if you go step by step.

The pump itself is lightweight as well so I was able to move it around the house with me without any issues. There are only 4 buttons to use, so it terms of operating the pump it is very easy, and you can adjust it to the speed and suction you want. Evenflo Feeding calls this the “Advanced Control Technology,” boasting 32 unique settings to really personalize your pumping.

The sizing of the flange insert can be a bit rough at first. I made the error of trying on the smallest flange to the largest, before realizing I should have gone the other way around: largest to smallest to prevent the trial and error on the pump and experiencing pain. If you are using too small of a flange you will feel the discomfort from the squeezing an improper fit.  I highly suggest trying the LARGEST flange first, and work your way down the sizes. Once you get yourself set up on the right flange size, there is absolutely no pain associated with using the pump which was a huge relief for a new mom like me.

The only negative side to this product is that the pump is very loud; I would not recommend using it near the baby if you are counting on an uninterrupted sleep. Since the machine has the ability to pump both breasts at once, you have no free hands, so you will have to sit back and just relax!

Tip for new moms:

After your first few uses with the pump, combined with having your baby gator on your breasts, they do get very sore, I found soaking in Epson salt baths really helped alleviate any pain.
