PHILIPS AVENT: What you actually need in your hospital bag?

It’s time to take a leaf out of the minimalist traveller’s handbook: pack only what you need, and resist the temptation to pack for every ‘just in case’ scenario. We know that’s no easy task, so here’s a hospital bag checklist to help you select exactly what you need and still feel comfortable and prepared.

First, the paperwork

Medical records don’t have quite the same cute factor as baby products for your newborn, but they’re still worth putting at the top of the list. Make sure you check with your hospital beforehand what paperwork and medical records you’ll need for checking in.

Clothing for you

The hospital may provide you with a gown, but many women find it’s nice to have their own clothing too for after delivery. You’ll also want to think about clothing for the return home.

Make sure you pack:

• Sleepwear
• Loose, comfortable clothing for the journey home. Many women find maternity clothes from mid-way through pregnancy are ideal.
• Maternity bra
• Several changes of comfortable, loose-fitting underwear
• Socks or slippers

Toiletries for you

It’s best to stick to the bare essentials here too, although everyone’s different so if you’re in doubt simply pack what you need to feel comfortable in your hospital bag.

Make sure you pack:

• Toothbrush and toothpaste
• Deodorant
• Body wash
• Shampoo and conditioner
• Hair band if you have long hair
• Lip balm
• Overnight or heavy flow maxi pads (to absorb bleeding)
• Breast pads (to absorb breast milk). Philips Avent Disposable Breast Pads protect your bra and clothes from leakage all day long.
• Baby bottles to feed the little one. Philips Avent Natural Bottles make it easy to combine breastfeeding with bottle feeding

Distraction and comfort

So labour might not be quite the time to begin reading the latest New York Times bestseller, but it’s worth packing some things to distract and comfort you.

You might like some of these:

• Massage oil, if you’d like a back rub
• Magazines
• Games on your phone or tablet. Don’t forget the charger!
• Playlists of your favourite tunes. Don’t forget your headphones!

Clothing and equipment for your baby

At last you get to see your little one in the ridiculously cute outfit you’ve chosen for them.

Make sure you pack:

• Two or three sleepsuits
• Diapers and wipes (the hospital may provide you with some too)
• Socks or booties
• Blanket
• Hat
• A suitable outfit for the trip home
• Car seat (you’ll need one to take your baby home)

Snacks for you and your partner

Labour really does require a lot of energy. And then some. So make sure you pack some snacks in case hospital food doesn’t hit the spot. Most hospitals will let you bring your own food, but make sure you double-check beforehand.

Consider packing:

• Snacks for you during labour. Think light and easy to digest, like rice cakes or cereal bars
• Snacks for your partner during labour
• Water bottle and drinks to sip

Get it ready

When you finalize your list, you’ll need to decide who will take your hospital bag for labour, and when you’ll have it ready. It’s generally best to have it ready a few weeks before your due date, just in case your little one makes an early arrival.

Happy packing!
