Blog: Product Review: Philips Avent Bottle Warmer By »

March 2nd, 2016

I find my mom constantly saying, “I wish we had this when you were little!”, when she finds things at my house or on the shelf during a last minute shopping trip for diapers. As we become a society that constantly wants to do everything faster, more efficiently and needs information at our fingertips, companies continue to make products to satisfy our wants. I say wants instead of needs because most of the time we can still get the job done without the gadget – but want it anyway.

As I pump and provide fresh milk in bottles for MJ, I’ve also been freezing my milk in bags and bottles to help keep supply up with demand. These boobs have been working overtime -we’ve got a hungry little guy on our hands!

When it comes time to warming or defrosting a bottle of breast milk, there have always been three options:

– Fill a bowl with warm water (or boil water) and place the bottle in it,

– Put the frozen bottle in the refrigerator to defrost, or

– Defrost at room temperature.

But, like I mentioned earlier…this is 2016…we want things now…like right now…like yesterday. So to meet our expectations in this ‘hurry up and wait’ lifestyle, we can use gadgets. Gadgets designed to make our lives easier, faster and less frustrating – like the handy dandy, portable, Philips Avent bottle warmer. Handy dandy? Ugh – not only does my body feel old and lethargic these days but my vocabulary is aging too!

Anyways, this warmer was on my registry, but I was sent a newer version to review. And that I did below 🙂

Philips Avent Bottle WarmerCover Image

With aretail of $49.99, this model fairs in the middle of the market when it comes to bottle warmer prices. The Avent bottle warmer promises to ‘gently heat bottles within 3 minutes’ and has the capability to defrost bottled m ilk. It claims that ‘unlike microwaves, the warmer heats bottles and food safely and won’t cause hotspots, ensuring the internal temperature is safe for baby’. I’ll be the judge of that!

PROS

– Sleek design. Not small by any means, but big enough to be functional and small enough to leave on a countertop.

– The circumference of the warmer ensures that it’s compatible with different bottle brands and toddler cups. This is always a plus, because not every child likes the same bottle and not every parent is loyal to the same brand.

– The indicator light turns on to let you know it’s working and it blinks to indicate the bottle and its contents are properly warmed to a safe temperature.

– The defrost setting is fantastic and much more convenient than defrosting under a running tap, faster than defrosting in the refrigerator and safer than using a microwave. I have Avent bottles, so I knew those would defrost (since it’s the same brand as the warmer), so I tried a different bottle with 6oz of frozen breast milk in it. The instructions said that 6oz right out of the freezer, at a temperature of approximately 5 degrees, should take 1.5-2 hrs. My findings? My bottle took 1hr and 20mins to fully thaw…so less than advertised! More than that, I found that the water in the warmer never actually got hot and neither did the bottle really. I took it out a bunch of times to shake it and test if it was still frozen in the middle, and the bottle wasn’t hot to the touch, nor was the water it came out of – which is great. So, if you have the time, this is definitely a great solution to defrosting breast milk safely.

Frozen Breast Milk  Defrost Setting

-When I tested refrigerated breast milk, it took 3 minutes to warm (as the instructions said), however, I found that leaving it in for another minute and a half (so 4.5mins total) gave it more warmth, without being scalding, and with no hotspots…again as advertised! I know, I know, I sound like an infomercial…but rest assured, my real name isn’t Vince Offer, I don’t reap the benefits of sales and I don’t sell ShamWow’s on TV at night. Though sometimes when I’m up, those towels and buy now offers seems quite enticing!

CONS

– There’s no timer on the warmer, so you find yourself either setting another timer, or relying on the light to flicker on the unit – but if you’ve left the room that doesn’t help much.

– It doesn’t turn off automatically when the milk reaches a certain temperature, or when a specific amount of time has passed, so you can very well overheat the milk.

– I also found the electrical cord extremely stiff and because it was quite long it actually got in the way. Though a long cord is beneficial, when the outlet is close to where the warmer is, it’s actually bothersome.

Final Verdict

Do I need it, or do I want it?

Both, actually.

As mentioned earlier, ‘needing’ it would mean I couldn’t get the job done without it – which isn’t the case. However, the ease, efficiency, portability and diversity (to warm/defrost and fit any bottle) of the product provides value and purpose to my current situation. It will save me precious time and probably sanity – ok maybe an over exaggeration!

The only thing this gadget is missing?…the ability to appear in the nursery when I say ‘go go gadget bottle warmer’!
