SEALY: Creating a Safe Sleeping Space for Baby

New babies spend much of their time asleep—making creating a safe sleeping environment one of the most important steps parents can take to ensure their little one’s safety. In addition to helping your baby get the best sleep possible, these 5 tips will help keep your baby’s nursery safe and secure so you can rest easy too.

1. Ensure the Mattress Fits Safely in the Crib

To ensure your baby’s full size crib mattress fits snugly inside the crib, avoid the “2 finger fit” rule. Instead, help ensure that your crib meets the standard by measuring the interior of your crib. It should measure between 27 3/8 inches and 28 5/8 inches wide and 51 ¾ inches to 53 inches long.  If the interior of your crib does not fall within these dimensions, contact your crib manufacturer for a replacement to ensure a safe sleeping environment for baby.

2. Bare Sleeping Surface

Stuffed animals and blankets might seem cute and snuggly, but they can actually create a hazardous sleeping environment for younger children.  Keeps blankets, pillows, and other soft bedding out of baby’s crib for safety.  A crib mattress pad with a fitted stretch skirt that wraps underneath baby’s mattress is a great option for adding extra comfort for infants, while still maintaining a flat sleeping surface.

3. Keep Baby’s Bed Away from Windows

Blinds with cords and strings can become potential strangulation hazards in the crib.  Position your little one’s crib away from windows to keep them safe and to protect their sleeping environment from the sun.  Don’t forget—monitors have cords too and should be kept away from baby’s bed.

4. Lower Baby’s Mattress when Ready

When your little one starts to roll over and sit up, don’t forget to move your baby’s crib mattress to a lower setting to ensure a safe sleeping environment.  Be sure to adjust the crib mattress support to the lowest setting before they are standing on their own to help prevent them from climbing out.  When you are ready to transition the crib to a toddler bed, don’t forget to flip your mattress over to the softer toddler side if you purchased a dual-stage mattress (around 2 years of age).

5. Look for a Firm, GREENGUARD Gold Certified Crib Mattress

When selecting your baby’s crib mattress, firmness is key for safety.  Look for innerspring mattresses with a high coil count and additional features, such as border wire, for the ultimate in firmness – the higher the coil count, the firmer the mattress.  If you prefer a foam mattress for baby, look for a model with thermo-bonded cores or high density foams.   If your baby’s mattress has the GREENGUARD Gold Certified seal, that means it has been tested for indoor air quality to help create a healthier nursery.
