Stroller Alternatives

Headed to the zoo, waterpark or ice-cream shop? Count on these fun wheels to keep even a tired child busy and happy on the journey

At some point your kiddo will refuse the stroller—they’re “big kids,” you know—but you’ll get half an hour into an outing and they’ll want to be carried. Make it easier on yourself, and more fun for your little one, with one of these stroller alternatives.

SCENARIO #1: For the Waterpark

You’re headed to a waterpark or splash pad and need to carry a day’s worth of supplies, from swimming and sun-safety gear to changes of clothing and a picnic lunch. Your stroller doesn’t have enough storage, but you need a contingency plan for carrying your two-year-old and four-year-old when they’re tired at the end of the day.

SOLUTION: A wagon!

There is a large seStep 2 Canopy Wagonlection to choose from: soft- and hard-sided canopied options to traditional open-sided choices or licensed models—think Frozen and Paw Patrol. You can even get wagons with hidden storage or add-on storage trailers.

You’ll be able to roll into the waterpark with all your supplies and with room to spare for your not-so-big-kids when they start to melt down.

SCENARIO #2: Enroute to the Ice-Cream Shop

Your favourite family outing is a walk to your local go-to ice cream shop for a double-scoop, but your ten-month-old is not having any part of the stroller anymore. He or she will walk but only for about a block, and then they’re too heavy to carry the rest of the way, but they’re too small for a traditional tricycle.

SOLUTION: A Trike!

Little Tikes 4 in 1 TrikeThe Little Tikes 4-in-1 Deluxe Edition Trike with Discover Sounds Dashboard is your answer. With four stages—from guided pushing when they’re tiny, through the learning-to-pedal phase, and finally to independent riding. Your kiddo will love their new wheels and you’ll love watching them learn.

This trike also has a harness, an adjustable/removable sunshade, quiet-ride tires and a fun, interactive control panel to keep her occupied on long treks.

SCENARIO #3: At the Zoo

Your annual trip to the big out-of-town zoo is this weekend and you know your stroller isn’t going to cut it for your one-year-old. But you need something that will keep him covered during the hottest part of the day, and as a new walker, you’d really appreciate being able to keep him in one place to feed him snacks and lunch. You’d really like to keep his pacifier and toys close by, without having to dig through your bag, too.

SOLUTION: A Radio Flyer

Radio Flyer Deluxe 4 in 1 Stroll N TrikeYou’re going to love the Radio Flyer Deluxe 4-in-1 Stroll N Trike. It has a stroller-style canopy, a three-point harness, a removable tray with cup holder and a pocket on the push handle for things you need close at hand. It grows with your babe, too, from a steering trike, to a learning trike, to a classic trike. Before you know it, the handle will come off and he’ll be riding through the zoo on his own.

SCENARIO #4: For the Park

Your seven-year-old lives at the playground in the summer, hopping on their bike and taking off down the block while you trail behind with the two-year-old sibling. Of course, the little one wants to be like big brother or sis, so the stroller is a no-go. The park is also just far enough away that you don’t want to run home for diaper changes or snacks, but you don’t want to carry a bulky bag either.

SOLUTION: The Multi-Tasking Trike

Aluminum 3-in-1 TrikeThe Aria Child Aluminum 3-in-1 Trike is exactly what you need. The push-handle option means your toddler can feel like they’re in on the action before they’re ready to pedal, and this system will adapt into an unassisted trike as they learn. The lightweight frame is ideal, the sunshade will keep them protected from UV rays, and the storage compartments are perfect for stashing all the supplies you’ll need for an epic park trip.
