Blog: ‘Twas Baby’s First Christmas By »

December 8th, 2016

Is baby’s first Christmas for them or for us?

With the holiday’s just around the corner, the visions of all the ‘firsts’ we will share with Callum are dancing around in my head. His first visit with Santa, him putting the star on the top of the Christmas tree, the first time he decorates sugar cookies, and the first time he wakes up and runs downstairs to see what Santa brought him.

But let’s be honest Callum will only be ten months old by the time Santa comes to town and these visions are pretty laughable. If you can for one minute picture about how I envision them and how they will probably play out – they’re pretty much polar opposite.

I picture Callum getting super excited about all the presents that Santa has left for him (obviously he’s making Santa’s nice list) clapping and screaming with delight as he plays with his new found treasures, but the reality is that it will probably be my husband doing this and Callum will be playing with the boxes the toys came in.

IMG_7122So, the question becomes, are we creating these memories for us or for Callum? Are we putting in all this effort to make his first Christmas magical for us or for him? And the answer is for all of us.  Yes, Callum may not remember his first Christmas, but we will and we will share those memories with him when he’s older.

But, it can be hard to decide where to draw the line with baby’s first Christmas.  Do we get a few things and call it a day, or do we throw caution to the wind and splurge on everything? We’ve decided to meet somewhere in the middle.

We’re asking Santa to bring Callum a few educational/development toys, games and books, and a few that maybe, we as his parents, just want to play with and will ask for under the guise of them ‘being for Callum’.

I guess we will have to wait until Christmas morning to see what Santa actually brings!

Parent Tip:

The holidays in and of themselves can be overwhelming with all the hustle and bustle, take some time to slow down and enjoy them; and when it comes to what or what not to do with your children during this festive time of year, do exactly this – WHATEVER YOU WANT!

Regardless of the holiday you celebrate, embrace the traditions that have been passed down for generations, make new ones, and create the memories now that will matter most in the future.
