What Type of Stroller Is Right for You?

Long before those monumental first steps, you and your baby will rely on a stroller to navigate your way through everyday life. Trips to town, to the playground, and to Grandma’s will require a great little vehicle for transport. Choosing the right stroller is super important, so here are some tips to help make it easier.

Decisions, decisions

When investing in a stroller, there are several factors to consider.

  • Are you strolling with an infant or are they closer to a toddler?
  • Is it only one child, or maybe twins?
  • Who will usually be pushing the stroller? A taller parent may opt for handles that adjust to their height.
  • How often will it be used?
  • Where will it be stored?
  • Are you looking for a Top 10 stroller?
  • Are there other features that are important to you?

Travel systems

If you want a real versatile kit and caboodle, the travel system includes a stroller, an infant car seat that doubles as an infant carrier, and a stay-in-car base. Simply snap the seat into the base when you and your wee one need to get around by car, and then release it to transport the carrier from car to stroller or home. Your baby stays buckled the entire time. As they outgrow the carrier seat, you can use the stroller, which includes its own seat and harness system.

Infant car seat carrier

A stroller frame allows you to snap most major infant car seat brands right into its base. The metal frame is extremely lightweight, easy to transport and folds compactly, because it’s always nice to have one less step in the travel process.

Lightweight strollers

Don’t want to lug around a big heavy baby-mobile? A lightweight stroller generally weighs less than 5 kg (12 lbs.), and offers a cost-effective, portable solution for families on the go. Since most lightweight strollers don’t have a fully reclining seat, they’re generally most suitable for children 6 months or older.

Growing needs

These flexible strollers give you the option to convert to a double stroller in the future if you have another little one. With an adapter kit, all models accept at least one infant car seat while some models accept two. If your babies are 2 to 3 years apart, a sit-and-stand model may be ideal.

Full-size strollers

Also known as standard or single strollers, full-size strollers are sturdy and stable, and offer the widest variety of features, colours, styles and price points. These types of strollers are typically used more often than other models and make up the majority of the Top 10 strollers. Their high-quality designs tend to last longer, which may be the right choice if you’re considering a larger family (don’t act like you haven’t thought about it).

Double & Triple strollers

For parents with twins, triplets, or several young children, these strollers are multi-baby must-haves. Some double and triple strollers give kids the option to ride tandem (front to back), while others are designed for side-by-side travel.

3-wheel strollers

More of a jogger than a stroller? Three-wheeled strollers are perfect for active parents, and even sometimes feature inflatable, all-terrain wheels. Also known as jogging or all-terrain strollers, these active models allow you to get a workout while providing your baby with a smooth, scenic ride in the great outdoors. Just keep in mind that it’s recommended you wait until your child is 6 months old before jogging with the stroller.

Do your homework

As with every piece of baby gear you buy, always keep quality, comfort and safety top of mind. Read stroller reviews and ratings to see what other parents have to say. And once you’ve settled on a safe and solid option, don’t forget to customize your ride with all of those must-have stroller toys and accessories like playthings, head supports, covers, shades, organizers and holders.
