What’s the right car seat for your baby?

Choosing the right car seat depends on your baby’s age, weight and height. You’ll likely need at least two different ones to accommodate your child’s growth.

Babies-R-Us-What-the-right-car-seat-for-your-baby-girl-in-car-seat-450x400There are three car seat stages:

  • Stage 1: rear-facing seats (use infant car seats or use infant/child or infant/child/booster car seats in rear-facing position)
  • Stage 2: forward-facing seats (use infant/child or infant/child/booster car seats in forward-facing position)
  • Stage 3: booster seats (use booster seats or use child/booster or infant/child/booster seats in the booster position)

Sound complicated? Don’t worry. Below is a simple car seat comparison, with more detail on each type to help you choose the best one for your baby.

Always keep in mind: car seats are for when babies are in cars. Avoid keeping your baby in a car seat outside of the car.

TYPES OF CAR SEATS

Infant car seats

Stage 1/Rear-facing only/1 to 15 kg (4 to 35 lbs.)*

Meet your baby’s first car seat, designed specially to support an infant’s back, head and neck. And since the last thing you want to do is disrupt your baby while you make trips in and out of the car, this option features a stay-in-car base and detachable carrier. Infant car seats also attach easily to compatible strollers, creating a super-convenient seat/stroller combo.

 Infant/child car seats

Stage 1 & 2/Converts from rear- to forward-facing / 2 to 30 kg (5 to 65+ lbs.)*

Usually referred to as convertible seats, this option offers great long-term value as it grows with your child through their toddler years. Before switching the seat to face forward, keep in mind that children should remain rear-facing until they’re approximately 2 years old.

Infant/child/booster car seats

Stage 1, 2 & 3/Converts from rear- to forward-facing to booster/1 to 45 kg (4 to 100+ lbs.)*

Often referred to as 3-in-1 seats, this type of car seat takes your baby from newborn to booster. It can be used as a rear-facing seat until your child outgrows the car seat’s weight/height limits, then converts to a forward-facing seat until your baby outgrows that stage as well. Finally, it converts as a booster seat when your little one weighs upwards of 40 lbs.

Child booster car seats

Graco Child Booster Seat

Stage 2 & 3/Converts from forward-facing to booster /10 to 45 kg (22 to 100+ lbs)*

These seats are used for older babies and toddlers. You can convert a forward-facing seat into a booster seat when your child outgrows the weight/height limits of the forward-facing position.

Booster seats

Stage 3/18 to 45 kg (40 to 100+lbs)*

When they’re too big for a traditional car seat but not quite big enough for none at all, a booster car seat will secure your child with the car’s seat belt. Style options include high back or backless.

* Weights and heights vary by model. Please refer to individual car seat instruction manual for manufacturer recommendation.
