After reviewing the confusing directions included (pro tip for manufacturers, please include written instructions when it comes to safety products especially!) we had a difficult time installing over baseboards. After contacting the manufacturer (Munchkin) they advised not to use it on baseboards at all due to safety concerns. Had we known this we would not have purchased.</span>

<span itemprop="description">We bought 2 of these gates for the top and bottom of our stairs. I helped my husband install the gate and as long as you can follow directions and have some mechanical aptitude it is not difficult to install. It comes with a layout to drill the holes. It extends fairly wide though the top of our stairs is a bit to wide so we used 2x4's that I stain matched and mounted the gate to that and now it fits perfectly.
It functions very well although the latch took a couple times of getting used to with one hand but now it is no problem. It swings wide open and latches top and bottom with a good swing. I am constantly up and down the stair so I am glad it is easy to use.
My 1 year old likes to play with the gates and they seem way sturdier then the other metal gate we purchased. We originally had a pressure mount at the bottom of the stairs but he could rip that right off the banister no matter how tight we adjusted it. we actually adjusted it so tight that the latch wouldn't release and he would still move it. I also like how this one doesn't have a bar across the bottom.
It was well priced and the dark color matched out banister so it doesn't look so out of place.</span>

<span itemprop="description">I was a little nervous to purchase this gate after reading a couple reviews and i honestly have to say this gate is great. It looks great with our dark oak banister and black wrought iron spindles and most importantly it is sturdy and does a great job as a top of the stairs gate. I would definitely recommend. I love that the gate door can come off completely so that it is not in the way if you dont need to use it. On a side note, I wish there was a way to purchase an extra set of mounting hardware since the door can come on and off completely then we could switch it to the bottom and top as needed.</span>
