He said the instructions were terrible and all the pieces weren't labeled. I don't like how loud it is when you open it. If you don't pull the gate far enough to close, it locks, so you have to retract it and try again. I do like that it retracts out of the way, and there is no bar to possibly trip over. And of great quality but what if it falls at a let go of the gate. However it turned out to be very sturdy and reliable to keeping the kids OUT ! It took longer than expected to build and get together but the labor was worth it in the end. The black one I received I really loved it gives like a total shut off- off limits warning sign. Howevet I wouldve definitely bought for the other rooms if the price itself would be in my mommy budget, but totally recommending to all mommies (specially us new ones who have anxiety about everything!) We have a gate installed at the top of our stairs that is a wooden gate that either needs to be shut or can be left open but it swings out into the hallway a few feet and has two metal pieces that stick out of the side when left open that are a definite hazard for a running toddler, so it basically always has to be closed. When you have other family or friends over, or just at night after the littles are in bed, sometimes you don't want people to have to navigate over or around your baby gates so this one is a nice compromise! This is by far one of my favorite. I really like the mesh design compared to the slates with other gates. ( My toddler likes to try and stick his legs through those) The retractable design is fantastic, though it is not as easy to retract as I would have liked it to be. This may just get better with practice. With gates everywhere being able to &quot;hide&quot; the gate when not in use is great. It was much easier to install than some of my other gates that I have used. Before I was offered this free sample I was not aware of this particular product, so I am very happy that I was able to test it. While it does have some nice features, as a mother of three young children, I do NOT recommend it. PROS: Out of the way when not in use (no tripping hazard). About impossible for an older child to mess with and get it open. Very sturdy as it is screwed to the wall (then again... this is also not so great. See cons). Easily adapts to any length up to what is specified. The gate material is soft but durable. CONS: It needs to be screwed to the wall (this is good depending on how you look at it. See pros). This does make for a very sturdy gate, which is definitely important. But we had to drill into our beautiful millwork on our stairs, so that was sad. Our other baby gate is a tension gate, which seems to be sturdy as well and didn't require any drilling. Now for the absolute biggest con of all... and the reason why I would NOT purchase this gate if we needed another. You have to use BOTH hands to open AND close it. GASP. While this does add to the security of the gate... it is a nightmare considering I am almost always either holding my four month old or a laundry basket or SOMEthing and this requires me to put whatever it is I'm holding down. As I mentioned I have three young children. Here's a scenario for you: if said four month old is crying, and I'm needing to go up the stairs to put him down for a nap (this baby gate is at the bottom of the stairs), but want to keep my other two from following me, I need to put said crying baby down, who is now screaming because he had to be put down, just to open this gate. If I'm coming downstairs and holding something and forgot that the gate is closed, I have to trot back up the stairs to put whatever it is down just so I can open this gate. Cons of the gate baby gate that I do not like the installation, having to drill holes in the wall. For those who may be renting this may not be ok to have unless discussed with owner. It's used for pets and children. We decided to install this gate at the bottom due to the mesh lining is not the greatest. Installation was easy and the directions were easy to follow. To retract the gate using one hand on the knob is a bit difficult but hopefully after time it will loosen up and not be so hard. It is very loud when it retracts so just a heads up on that. Overall this gate is pretty sturdy and has a nice look to it. Compared to gates we have used in the past I am not a big fan of the mesh lining just for the fact that if you put the gate at the top of stairs your child could easily wiggle through. The area at the top of our stairs is limited and a retractable gate is perfect. First, the packaging was wonderful. We had a hurricane rain and the box was soaked, but everything inside was preserved with nice bags and wrapping. The installation was great. This product has so many options and applications. We chose the configuration that worked for us, used the templates provided, and not long after we had functioning gates. I will say we have an older home and had to do some figuring around the banister and railing but made it function perfectly. Then we had a problem. With the baby we wanted to keep the cats from coming upstairs and they could crawl under the gate. We studied it for a while and bingo - all we had to do was change the configuration. We used the appropriate template, unscrewed, and reattached everything. Now it works just as good as before, looks great, and keeps the cats out. Using the gate holding baby does take some getting used to, however the other benefits definitely outweigh this. I also like the fact that when we no long need to block the stairs we can use it to block off other rooms (cat room). However this gate was extremely unfuncional, it requires two hand to even open or close it. And considering it's a baby gate, that second hand is often not available. I would not recommend this gate in a high traffic area like a hall way, which is what we purchased ours for. In addition the actual install of the gate was a pain and the instructions were very complicated. We ended up returning the gate. The area at the top of our stairs is limited and a retractable gate is perfect. First, the packaging was wonderful. We had a hurricane rain and the box was soaked, but everything inside was preserved with nice bags and wrapping. The installation was great. This product has so many options and applications. We chose the configuration that worked for us, used the templates provided, and not long after we had functioning gates. I will say we have an older home and had to do some figuring around the banister and railing but made it function perfectly. Then we had a problem. With the baby we wanted to keep the cats from coming upstairs and they could crawl under the gate. We studied it for a while and bingo - all we had to do was change the configuration. We used the appropriate template, unscrewed, and reattached everything. Now it works just as good as before, looks great, and keeps the cats out. Using the gate holding baby does take some getting used to, however the other benefits definitely outweigh this. I also like the fact that with extra hardware, when we no longer need to block the stairs we can use it to block off other rooms (cat room). We have friends who have the retract-a-gate, and this gate works really, really well... but it's more expensive.
