It is a little difficult for him to try to buckle himself vs our regular Diono seat, the straps tend to twist and flip at the buckle piece sometimes, but it's no biggie that we're still helping him out to make sure it's done safely. The sale associate at Toysrus was wonderful. She was very enthusiastic and helpful. She was running solo in the baby side of the store and was so busy, all the while keeping a big smile on and made sure all my questions were tended to. However, when it comes time to use it as a seatbelt positioning booster it does not work. The clip that is supposed to hold the seatbelt in position is much too small, and the seatbelt slides out of it extremely easily and is then in front of the child&rsquo;s face. This was actually a replacement car seat for one that had the same exact problem. However, I've assembled the Maestro and adjusted the straps according the manual. My daughter says it's comfortable enough with the padding, but she does complain that the straps hurt her. I'm not sure if it's because it's brand new so the straps just need to be &quot;broken in&quot; or if they'll always be this rigid, but they are definitely very hard and I can see how they would be uncomfortable for her. I'll probably mess around with them to see if they become more flexible over time since there are no harness covers that work with this specific car seat. I like that the car seat comes with 2 cup holders, and they seem deeper than the cup holders she has in her old car seat so her drinks are less likely to tip over and fall out of the cup holder. We were looking for something that works in our 2nd car that we use for short trips around the city as well as something to take on international trips. Also, we needed seats that convert to boosters, and prefer to keep the kids in high back 5pt harnesses for as long as possible. Installation was easy and straight-forward using the latch system with tether in our 2007 Subaru Outback. Its a bit of a tight fit and definitely would not accommodate anyone sitting between the car seats. When my 5.9 yo got in, they were psyched about the double cup holders, and were able to most of the buckling solo. However, the harness straps were very tight (too short) and they are not going to be in those for much longer. They are tall and slender and the straps are on the highest setting. We made it work, but they prefer just the lap belt. The shoulder strap of the car seatbelt was fine -- it's never perfect (they hate things touching their neck), but looked safe. The seat doesn't have much padding and they complained that the seat was hard and hurt their butt. My 2.9 yo didn't have any complaints, but they rarely do. The straps had much more slack and it was easy to get them in and out. It&rsquo;s the perfect size for smaller backseats. Extremely easy assembly of the cup holders and was very straightforward with adjusting the straps. We did not even feel the need to look at the directions. We loved that the lap adjust is completely covered. Keeps our littles legs from getting burned ( south Texas heat). Installed in less than 5 min. I really like that it&rsquo;s a 5point harness and the straps seem very well made. The only reason I have this 4stars instead of 5, is because there is one small part of the plastic that seems to rub and leave indentions on my littles legs after a long car ride. My granddaughter thought that was the best part ever. The material is nice and looks like it will be easy to maintain. The seat feels comfortable from a feel standpoint of course. She says it is comfortable and it brings her down more in the car so her feet are not dangling as they did before in her other seat. The harness belts are very easy to move and re-position. The chest clasp is one of the easiest to open I've used. It actually is a raised button type instead of being flat and having to really press to move it through. Previous evenflo chest clasps were very hard to press open. The sides have a good deal of cushion and the head rest is not too cumbersome. The seat itself is much lighter than my previous evenflo carseat which at first I was concerned about since most of the time when there is more weight to something you feel better about it. But I am putting my faith in evenflo that they know what they are doing with the newer models. Installation is fairly simple but the seat does not feel like it is totally locked in as it moves back and forth. My husband has made sure it is in place and secure so I am sure it is -- the other car seat did the same thing so I assume it is due to the way they are positioned mostly from the rear for securing the seats. We have a Taurus Wagon so we keep the seat in the middle of the back seat and of course facing forward and using the belt that goes around to the back of the seat to a metal clamp to secure the seat. Even so, I wish it was made a little heavier and a bit more cushion on the seat would be nice - which is a big thing considering our little ones have to ride in them for sometimes long periods and their bottoms should be just as comfortable as ours when we are in the vehicle. Right now we are still using the 5-point harness and we are confident in the protection and my granddaughter is comfortable and feels like a big girl now in her new seat. The first time she used it of course we had to make sure we had a drink so she could utilize the cup holder. Overall I am giving this item a 4 star as it is made well and the safety features that are provided are impressive. It&rsquo;s super padded, but so light to carry and compact. My kids get car sick so I love a car seat that I can move in and out of the vehicle easily. The padding is also more like neoprene, so I think it will resist spills better. And because it&rsquo;s a booster base, there&rsquo;s not an abyss for crumbs, crackers, spilled milk, etc., to get stuck! Another thing I like is that it&rsquo;s not super wide so someone can sit in the middle seat next to it and not feel crowded out. It&rsquo;s truly a booster, but with the 5- point harness. I love it! The only thing I wish was that the latch system had the seat belt type latches, not the hooks. The seat belt style made it so quick and easy to move the seat between cars. The hooks take much more effort. I&rsquo;m not lazy, it&rsquo;s an efficiency issue for me. All I had to do was attach the cup holders with one screw each. It was easy to install in my husband's truck. It has the typical tether system like that of most of the carseats we have owned. I like how it has 2 cupholders. Another thing I like about the Maestro is that the seat part is a nice size. It is not super small. The padding in the seat feels very nice as well. A couple of the things I do not care for is that the straps seem much more stiff compared to other seats we've owned. Also, the plastic that the seat is made of doesn't seem as sturdy. It feels a little flimsy. We have owned Evenflo seats in the past (My daughter and I were even in an accident while she was riding in an Evenflo seat and it kept her safe.), so I trust that it is made with safety in mind. Overall, the Maestro booster seat seems like a nice seat. My daughter (4.5) has said she is comfortable and has fallen asleep in it. The only big complaint is the detachable cup holders get kicked off nearly everytime she gets in the car seat. Whether we put her in or she climbs in it herself, the left cup holder gets hit and it falls off. My husband put it together and into the vehicle with no issues. I set it up to fit my daughter with no issues. The cupholders are handy and easy for my daughter to reach and overall it's a nice looking seat. I have had many years of experience with all types of car seats (I have 4 kids and the oldest is 12). But since day one we've had issues with these buckles. Previously my daughter was able to mostly buckle and unbuckle herself, which is important to me since I have multiple children and she's old enough to only do so when appropriate. I had hoped it would get easier after a little use, but 3 weeks later it's still just as difficult as before. Here are the specific issues: The chest clip is hard to line up to close, and the release button is hard to push while pulling apart the sides. The bottom buckle has a dark slit where both buckles feed into it. Within that slit are the two dark slots that the buckles need to go into, but I can't see them unless I'm at just the perfect angle, and my daughter definitely can't find them in a dim minivan. They are also not centered within the slit, which makes them hard to find as well. And it is also difficult to fully lock them into position. This also makes it impossible for my daughter to unbuckle them on her own. Lastly, the seat cushion is not as comfy as I had hoped. My daughter had several occasions during the trip where she complained with tears in her eyes about her butt hurting. Overall, the seat looks nice and serves its function well.
