The Secure Step gate helps parents keep their children safe from common household dangers, especially around the stairs. Depending on how you set the swing control, the gate will swing in one or both directions to prevent swinging over the stairs. <span itemprop="description">Within 2 weeks of installing the, the gate seems to have shortened and is getting shorter and shorter by the day (width) which means the gate no longer locks at all!!! Swings right open!! I can't seem to figure out how to widen the gate so that it will lock again and there are no clear instructions for this. We bought 2 gates and both have the same problem. My 12 month old can pull the gate at the bottom of the steps and the gate opens and the top gate does not even lock so it swings right open. We may as well not have put up these gates.</span>

<span itemprop="description">I just installed this gate yesterday. Was relatively easy to install. Hard to measure 3mm exacttbut no issues. Will have to see how it stands up against my little one.but so far I like it. It is strong metal and doesn't have the base at the bottom, which is good because we have hardwood on our stairs and didn't want anything to scratch. Also with elderly people on the house didn't want a chance of tripping on a base.</span>

<span itemprop="description">[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] We've had this gate for a couple years now, and while we've been happy with it overall, there does appear to be a design flaw in the plastic safety guard thing at the bottom. My wife shut it pretty hard soon after we originally installed it. To Evenflo's credit, they replaced the catch, and as it's worked ever since then, I figured it might have just been a flawed piece.
Well, today my two-year-old shut it rather hard, and the piece cracked in two and went skipping halfway down the stairs. A grown woman slamming it too hard, I can understand... but a gate that is supposed to prevent babies and toddlers from passing should be stronger than said babies and toddlers.
Other than that, it's been a pretty good gate. It's not the easiest latch in the world to open, but it probably shouldn't be - my five-year-old still can't open it, and I'm okay with that since it's supposed to prevent kids from getting through. But there's no particular reason that that the plastic piece at the bottom should be as flimsy as ours has been (and no reason I can think of that it is plastic instead of metal).</span>

<span itemprop="description">We bought this gate about 3 weeks ago because our 2 year old started opening the previous gate. This one looked like it world be harder to open and we remembered another couple had this gate and their 3 year old couldn't open it. Well lo and behold our child opened it consistently today and we didn't teach him how to do it plus it's a challenge sometimes to open it myself. The construction is sound and we like it overall but it doesn't serve its purpose of keeping our child from going downstairs.</span>

<span itemprop="description">The gate is great but the description is wrong. The gate itself is 30", but the pieces that attach to your wall are actually 32", which caused a lot of problems since we have a banister that the gate had to fit under. In the end we had to raise the banister so it worked, but it was a headache. The wrong allen key was also provided, but ended up using one we had to tighten the sliding mechanism.</span>

It was easy to install, the neutral color blended very well with the colors in our home, was extremely easy to use (could open with one hand while I had a laundry basket in the other!), yet my kid couldn't open it no matter how hard she tried. Gate opens either way, which is handy as well. This one is very sturdy, my kid climbed on it & it didn't move. I would recommend it to anybody!</span>
