There is an easy to use velcro back that opens to reveal a battery pack and several buttons to select the features you want and the timer. I love the option to choose between music, white noise, and other noises like breathing or heartbeat and that there are multiple volume levels. I also like that you can choose each category separately so that you can have the noise on with or without the light. While these controls are in the back and closed up with the velcro, you can also then turn your choices on and off by gently pressing the koala's belly. We started using this toy when my youngest was 8 months old. It doesn't seem to keep him asleep with the breathing option as suggested but it may have worked if we started using it when he was younger. My 3 year old has also been enjoying this toy carrying it around and taking care of it. I have noticed that because the belly is the on/off button, he often turns it off accidentally by hugging it. Upon opening, my son was mesmerized by it. But very quickly took the battery operated hunk of plastic out since the back is a very easy velcro to take apart. (As opposed to snaps or a zipper). It was more of a game for him to open the velcro and take it out as opposed to sleeping with it as it was intended. As for the toy to sleep with, it is very soft but my husband did point out that it was creepy when it glowed red at night when it should be sweet and peaceful. The leaf I think shouldnt even be there in the belly. It's weird. The motorized belly was also creepily low to his personal area and didnt read it was his belly as much it was his lowest area if you know what I mean. Trying to keep it g rated here but I personally would not buy this toy. It said 0 years old as if it was for any age. My son is 2 years and 6 months and he very quickly took it apart as it was too easy to do for him. My recommendation is to make the velcro snaps instead , change the color to something other an ominous red and perhaps have it speak or talk or sing a lullaby. The heartbeat and lights seem like they would appeal to a child under two, but it's fairly large and heavy - not something you would want a child of that age unsupervised with. Truly quite cute. Very soft. We received this as part of the Play, Rate, Review Program. We love most of our mattel/fisher price products, so I hate to leave this review. I am a labor and delivery nurse, and I cannot recommend a product that may be placed in a baby&rsquo;s crib. The AAP is clear on their recommendation for safe sleep- a baby, a flat sleep surface, and a swaddling blanket only. If you intend to use this as a soother near the crib then it is so cute and I&rsquo;ll leave my thoughts below, but I think most people would put this in the crib or bassinet. As a soother not a lovey, this is cute. The mechanism that makes it &ldquo;breathe&rdquo; is pretty noisy. It plays a few noises and some enjoyable music. The music is soft and soothing. The white noise isn&rsquo;t loud enough for us. All of my kids have slept with a white noise machine and we keep it pretty loud and use a box fan sound. This white noise is pleasant but soft. The koala is soft and snuggly. I would think an older child might enjoy snuggling with it. My son is just 11 months though so I kept it on his nightstand. This guy also has a low light that glows. Once you turn it on and the belly starts to move, is when things get weird. The idea was great but the practical aspect was defiantly missed. Firstly, the &quot;breathing&quot; feature doesn't line up with the sound of the breathing selection. I noticed that when the inhale was taken place the sound of an exhale was present. Now I'm aware that for a baby this means nothing but to the parent's it's expected for the product to work as intended. Secondly, the level of the music was extremely low. Like you almost have to have the bear directly on your ear to hear it. Once again you may think this is nothing for a newborn but, in the womb it's not quiet so having the volume where it can be a bit higher would make a more useable product. Lastly, which is the one quality I as a parent loved was the way the bear felt. There was a great deal of thought taken when completely this part and it tells. If there were a blanket made from the exact same softness as this bear you would never want to put it down. I know this because my kids play with the bear more when it's turned off compared to when it's used for it's intended purpose.
