I thought the app was a great addition to the set. It gives you all these fantastic details about the car, as long as you are using a hot wheel Id car. The app got my kids more interested in what the car was doing other than just sending it on a ramp to see if it makes it or not. He took the Race Portal out right away, and immediately started setting up some tracks to play with it, while it charged. The portal was pretty intuitive to use, but after maybe ten minutes of seeing how fast his cars were going, the novelty wore off. He ended up playing with the app more than the actual Race Portal. He enjoyed looking at the different cars he can collect, and playing the racing game on the app, but lost interest in going back and trying the race portal again. He's gone back to use the app several times to look at the cars again, and race on the app, but doesn't seem interested in using the portal at all. I'm giving the product three stars because it is easy to setup, and the app is really nice, but the portal itself doesn't seem to do very much. The best thing about it is that it works with the existing track. I wish I could give it more stars, but it seems very limited in what it can do, and in holding my 8 year old's interest. I kept feeling like we were missing something with the race portal, which doesn't come with any instructions so maybe we were missing some amazing thing it does, but it doesn't look like it. I&rsquo;ve played with matchbox car all through childhood and this is definitely a step up. We easily put this together hooked up the Bluetooth and we were off. It was so awesome my kids have played with this several times. The only thing part that was a little bit hard was the instructions but thankfully my husband was here to help and this track was endless fun. With kids being so interested in video games this system combines hot wheels style cars (id version) to the new age technology that kids crave!! My 8 year old son AND 12 year old nephew both LOVE this product. Neat features! They love how they can connect the iPad or android phone and tablet to build a virtual garage! Set up is super easy. They can test cars and compare lap speeds. Lot of fun. They did have a hard time building without parental help but once i got it together they played non stop. They did say they wish the car colors were brighter and better design. However, we did have some trouble getting it up and running, and found it a little complicated, even though he plays a lot of video games. We only had some straight tracks to attach to the portal, and while we could make a ramp, it would definitely be more fun with other tracks attached. The portal and app is surprisingly easy to set up and once the vehicles are scan they connect very quickly. The track system is easy to assemble so no long waiting times before the toy can be used. While the toy does require digital technology, it is very interactive and encourages interaction and cooperative play amongst children. The cars are robust and well made.
