There are 5 full pages worth of pictures associated with words or sounds. There are 10 colored buttons that light up surrounding the big middle red button. The big red button spins the &ldquo;wheel&rdquo;, the lights go around the circle of colored buttons and then it lands on a space on that particular page. There are four learning modes: explore, sounds, detective, and sound blender. Explore mode will say the name of the picture whether that be an object or an animal. Great for the younger age range for this toy. Sounds mode gives the animal or the objects sound effect that it makes. Detective mode plays a sound and the child has to find the object or animal that makes that sound. This mode is like a game and probably better for older children, like 2-3 years. Sound blender mode is used to blend the different sounds together so the child can form their own words by pressing the different colored buttons. The age range for this toy is 18 months or older. There is a switch that will switch the game into the four different modes and there is a switch to change the volume level between loud, quieter and off. At that age, this toy is a fun activity to do with an adult to help them figure it out and also solo play to push buttons, manipulate the game, turn the pages, etc. I cannot wait to give this to my nephew for his birthday, he is turning three. My kids love them all! This is the best new take on a classic toy. There are 5 wheels you can flip through and each wheel can do each of the 4 features. It can do sounds like the original version of this, but it can also do the word sounds and sound blender. It will make the sounds for you as you push the buttons or a more advanced child can play &ldquo;sound detective&rdquo; to find the sounds that make words. It&rsquo;s a great early learning tool to help kids get ready to learn sounds. The toy is lightweight so it can be easily carried around by an 18 month old and be enjoyed for a child as young as 18 months to a child as old as 1st grade. There are 50 different words with phonics, music, and sentences. We absolutely love this for our little one. Leap frog phonics is mean to be teaching the relationship between sounds (phonemes) and the letters or groups of letters (graphemes) that represent those sounds in written language, very important for kids to understand the sounds, and vowel differences. There are different modes for different levels of learning. You can start with just pressing the buttons to hear how a particular word sounds or you can choose your own sound to create a word! We are still using the stock batteries, but as much as my daughter uses it we may have to change them out soon. She dropped it so much I was worried it would stop working, but it holds up to toddler tantrums and impulsive throws pretty well. She loves to turn the pages to hear the different sounds and she also enjoys the music.
