I love these. Have you ever reached for something while pumping both breasts at the same time? You kind of have to squish the flanges up against your breast with your arms. With the original flanges, pressing the stiff edges onto my breasts kind of felt almost sharp and I would lose suction, might as well have set one or both down. Well, with the new flexible edges, it&rsquo;s more likely to continue suction and is a lot more comfortable to squish against me. This is much more comfortable in general and it&rsquo;s nice the chemicals used to make these won&rsquo;t harm the milk I&rsquo;m giving to my baby (or my breasts). But when I had the opportunity to receive and try the Medela Flex Breast Shield through the weeSpring Parent Panel, I was excited to try something new with this baby. I've been frustrated with shields in the past, feeling as though I did quite fit any of the size options, this one is too big, another too small, and nothing fitting just right. In my package, I received several breast shield sizes, along with a sheet providing tips on how to determine the right size shield. I hadn't seen something like that before, so it was helpful to be able to choose what would actually fit me. Once I had determined that 24 mm was the right fit, I was ready--and even a little excited--to try out the Medela Flex Breast Shield. And who is ever excited to pump?!? As the name indicates, these shields are a little flexible, the soft rim providing some give to them, and they truly were comfortable. The shields easily fit onto my older Medela pump parts. Hooray for being able to mix old and new parts! After getting the shields situated and turning on the pump, I almost forgot they were there; I barely felt or noticed them. As for efficacy in pumping, I didn't notice a difference in how quickly or how much milk was expressed. Overall, the Medela Flex Breast Shield is a great option for pumping mamas. I have had three different pumping experiences with three different children and without a doubt if you were a first time mom, these are the breast shields I would recommend. Everything is awkward about pumping the first few times you do it and the thing I remember most with my first child is the pain. It turned me off, but as with breastfeeding, the more you do it the easier it becomes. This is the first time I have used a softer breast shield and I can say after years of pumping that these are very comfortable. Oh, what I wouldn&rsquo;t give to go back and have these with my first kiddo! The outer rim is a soft silicone which is nice, but the best part is the shape of the shield. It is more curved than the traditional shields from Medela and because of this it molds the breast shape better and creates a seamless fit and suction. I am used to the edges sticking out a bit. I also use a pumping bra that holds everything in place but with this Flex Breast Shield from Medela it is almost not necessary because the fit is much better. I have also spent a considerable amount of time trying to size myself and get the correct size flange. My breasts are two different sizes and with this comes nipple and areola differences and given the Medela guidelines, I now use two different size flanges to make sure I have a proper fit. I have never been able to pump extraordinary amounts of milk (usually I average around 4 ounces) and I didn&rsquo;t see any marked improvement in what I expressed, but I would recommend these based on comfort alone.
