It does not stick out as far as other flanges, making them much easier to work around. I don&rsquo;t believe that my output changed much, but my level of comfort while pumping was 100% improved! When I received the Flex shield I was provided detailed instructions to find my correct size of flange and since that time it has changed my outlook when pumping. The different shape and soft rim allows for the flange to lay comfortably on the breast which I felt allowed me to pump my milk quickly and comfortably. I find them to be a lot more comfortable than the traditional shield. The oval shape allows them to sit nicely on the breast and the soft rubber rim helps create a seal that makes it easy to pump. The shields don&rsquo;t dig into the skin, like the traditional hard plastic shields, so they don&rsquo;t leave any marks. They come in a variety of sizes. I was able to use the same size shield as the traditional plastic shield, 27mm. I've noticed a slight increase in milk output when I use the flex shields (I track output in an app)! Any little bit helps if you're not a big producer like me. I&rsquo;ve also noticed that my milk letdown is slightly faster when I use these shields. I have noticed a faster pumping experience, pumping the same amount in 10 minutes that I was in 15 with my old flanges, therefore ultimately pumping more milk in the 15 minutes I am pumping. I did not notice any difference in expression&mdash;neither speed of expression nor total output, but I don&rsquo;t imagine there would be a difference as long as the user is using the correct size. I will definitely continue to use these breast shields, and I would recommend them to other pumping moms; however, I&rsquo;m not sure I would deliberately purchase these at extra cost versus using the breast shields that come with the Medela Pump in Style Advanced. Pumping and feeding was easy on my 12 week maternity leave, but going back to work was a game changer. When my son started daycare, he was guzzling 20 ounces of milk in an 8 hour period. I don't know if it was anxiety or a growth spurt, but I couldn't keep up. And pumping at work is less than glamorous - I definitely wasn't giving it the time it deserved. After 2 weeks back at work, I was struggling and looking for anything to help my milk production while pumping. I was taking supplements and drinking teas and eating oatmeal - whatever I found that might help. Then through the wee spring parent panel, I was sent the Medela Flex Breast Shields. I was so excited to try something new! I thought these might be the miracle product that forever changes my milk production! Sad to say, the Medela Flex Breast Shields are not life-changing, but they are a major improvement. I was already using all Medela products and the hard plastic breast shields that come standard with the pump (although I use a 27mm instead of the standard 24mm). The new breast shields are still hard plastic, but they have a sort rubbery edge that lays flat on my breast. And the design is slightly different - the cup shape is more contoured, leading to a better fit. Overall, these are more comfortable than the standard shields. The rubber edge is soft, but it does occasionally pinch like a rubber band. The seal is better, and I have noticed significantly less milk on the shield when I'm finished pumping. Less waste on the shield and more in the bottle is great for me! The shields are still as easy to sterilize as the older version. Because of the contoured shape, they are slightly harder to store, but that hasn't been an issue. Overall, my milk production might be slightly up due to less waste on the shield and a better fit on my breast. They are a bit bigger than the standard, and are also more of an oval shape than a round shape. Which didn't really fit my breasts that great, oddly enough, as their design is supposed to be fit better. They also would leave a red ring from the suction some times. I didn't find they were any more comfortable than the standard shields, which is why I gave just a 3 star average review. I didn't notice I was able to express any more milk than I usually do. And the rim was not very soft, when I heard about them, I thought maybe it would be a gel like rim that would conform and be super comfortable? But they are not. It was nice to know they do not contain BPA or any other harmful materials. Overall, if they came free with the pump, great. But I would not go out and specifically buy them. The cupped shape and flexible rim make it so much more comfortable, which makes me more relaxed, so I let down earlier, and the whole process goes faster. At 3 am, even 5 minutes makes a huge difference. Plus, I get more milk per session then. Also appreciate that Medela makes a point to offer BPA-free products for something that collects milk we&rsquo;re providing for our little ones. The only reason I gave 4 instead of 5 stars is since they are larger, sometimes the shields don&rsquo;t stay completely flush and milk leaks down the bottom. As a second time breastfeeding/pumping mom, I was pleasantly surprised what a difference these flex breast shields have made with my pumping experience. I was also surprised to find that I was using the wrong size with my old shields! Before purchasing, I definitely recommend reading the &quot;choosing the right size&quot; instructions to ensure you select the right size. I had previously been using a shield one size too big (27), and was shocked to realize after about 6 months of pumping. I actually needed a size 24, so I'm very grateful to have corrected that issue. The assembly and use of these shields is extremely easy - it's essentially the same as the traditional shields, and they fit perfectly on my existing valves (attached is a picture comparing the standard shields vs the flex shields for reference). Once assembled, I was able to fit them on with much more ease. Previously, I would find myself adjusting my shields to get them in just the right spot, wasting precious minutes of my time. With the PersonalFit Flex Shields, I was able to get pumping immediately, as they fit great and were extremely comfortable. I did not have to adjust them once, and it was an overall great pumping experience because they were so comfortable! I was even able to up the pressure on my pump, which allowed for a greater milk output, without any discomfort. Fast forward a few weeks to when I got these flexible breastshields to try from weeSpring. They looked the same as my other pump flanges, except these ones had a squishier rim. I popped the 27mm sucker on my boob and away we went. Felt the same. Milk output was the same. Everything felt the same. I figured it's just a breast shield, right? Wrong. Fast forward again to when I had a clogged milk duct. My boob felt like a giant bruise, and of course the only way to make it better (and the LAST thing I wanted to do) was to pump. Ugh. I turned the pump on to the lowest suction setting, and hesitantly put the shield over my nip awaiting a searing pain to ripple through my boob. Huh. It didn't hurt nearly as much as the usual hard plastic version. So ladies, if you ever get clogged ducts or think you might, go for the flexible rimmed version. Pump smarter, not harder. I love the Medela Flex Breast Shield. They came with an easy guide to make sure your fit was correct with the right size shield. The soft rim was much more comfortable than the hard plastic edge of traditional breast shields. I always got pinched from traditional shields and with the flex edges, I couldnt even feel them there! I didnt notice a significant difference in how much milk I was able to pump, but it definitely made me more relaxed while I pumped because i wasnt constantly readjusting the shields because they were uncomfortable. The only con that I experienced was with the 24mm shield. I am between a 27mm and 24mm, so I wanted to try out both to double check fit. The 24mm funnel was extremely short and the tip of my nipple hit the back or base and I had to use the 27mm because of this. The 27mm ended up being the correct fit, but the 24mm does has a significantly shorter neck and Im not sure why its such a big difference between the two. Overall, I would recommend this product to all moms that have to pump. The Medela flex shields are an absolutely great product to use for my pumping needs. The traditional breast shields tend to be hard and uncomfortable; however, the soft rim on the Medela flex shields made a world of a difference in my pumping experience. It was a much more comfortable and even efficient pumping session. Also, since I like to hand express during a session to help more milk come out, the shields were extremely comfortable for that because you aren't pressing the breast against hard plastic, but instead, the soft rim acts more like a cushion. Ironically enough I was dealing with some 2nd time Mom guilt right around the time I received the new flanges. A little backstory , I breastfed my first daughter with absolutely no problem. My oldest was so attached to the breast and refused a bottle after about 4 months and didn&rsquo;t drink from anything other than my breast and a sippy however I was able to pump tons and tons of milk for her , she&rsquo;s almost 4 and just a year and a half ago I found some stashed away in my sisters deep freezer. Fast forward to now , I&rsquo;m a wife and mom of a very busy toddler and always constantly on the move so I hadn&rsquo;t been having as much luck with pumping as I did previously. I was feeling guilty for even considering formula due to what I thought was &ldquo;low supply&rdquo;. The irony was that I used the EXACT same pump and flanges as before but found it very difficult to even use now. It was until recently that I even realized there were different sizes. Eureka ! Apparently I had the wrong size. Immediately upon trying the new Flex Flanges , I noticed a difference in the feel and sound of the pump. The flange fit much better than the hard plastic flange. I was able to pump more comfortably which led me to pump more and stash a little more milk for my little one. I really enjoyed the soft rim because it fits much better in the hands free bra and it&rsquo;s just a better feel for my breasts in general. Talk about a mood booster ! Knowing that it wasn&rsquo;t me with the issue and just an issue of using the pump incorrectly with incorrect flanges , changed my views. I would definitely recommend these to just about anyone who felt like they were needing a change. I felt I had to take an extra moment to adjust it to my body, instead of the perfectly circular shields I am used to. Side by side comparison, these shields look lighter and like they would be more comfortable that traditional shields. Yet, once I used these with a handsfree pumping bra, I really couldn't tell the difference between it and the regular design. I didn't notice much change in comfort or milk production or efficiency--admittedly, I don't pump as regularly with my second child as I did my first, so this experience may be different for other women, especially if they need to pump often, daily.
