But I should have measured my stairs first, since the opening downstairs is 48 inch long, 2 inches more than the largest opening of this gate. But my disappointment didn&rsquo;t last long - we also need a gate for the top of the stairs, and we do have banisters there as well, with an standard size opening, so it does work for us, just not exactly where we intended to place it originally. We want to baby proof our house, but we were also concerned about not damaging our brand new banisters in the process. So this gate is exactly what we needed. I can&rsquo;t tell for sure it won&rsquo;t have any damage after long term use (since you do need to install it tight for a secure fit), but I&rsquo;m pretty sure they will be less noticeable than having to drill anything. The straps go tightly around the banisters and it feels secure. My 11 month old is starting to pull up to stand, so we needed something sturdy. The gate itself is easy to open for an adult, but hard for baby to figure it out (although my toddler figure it out pretty quickly). The entire gate opens, so the door is as large as the opening of your stairs. Instructions are okayish - it&rsquo;s hard to figure out some of the images, but nothing impossible to assemble. The pieces used to install it to a banister seem to be durable. The gate itself is sturdy. I love that it's easy to adjust the width of the gate and that there's no bar or anything to have to step over when the gate is open. I wish it could swing open both detections instead of just one. The piece that stops the gate from opening both directions is plastic &amp; I wish it were metal so I wouldn't have to worry about it breaking. This gate is taller than my old gate and I really like that so that my kids can't try to climb over it. We had to redneck engineer some blocks of wood due to the shape of our bannisters. But it serves its purpose. Be warned though that this is a single-handed latch and VERY easy to open. They say the gate is only recommended for ages 6-24 months, which is true because our almost 2 year old can now open this by himself. Which is of course a huge safety hazard and makes me extremely scared for his safety. I wish there was an option to add a two-step latch system to make this safer for older children. Just because he&rsquo;s 2 years old doesn&rsquo;t mean he&rsquo;s able to go up and down a steep staircase alone! The only issue that I had with this gate came in mounting the side support to the wall. Due to the wood moulding at the floor, I needed to use the supplied spacers to keep the support plumb. The supplied screws were much too short to fasten the support to the wall without a spacer let alone with a spacer. Had I not needed the spacers, the supplied screws would have only been able to enter the wall stud by 1/4 inch after going through the sheet rock. The solution was easy as I had 2 1/2 inch screws in my shop and used these to mount this side support to the wall and into the wall stud.
