Toddler Nutrition Guide

Most days, you’re happy if your baby eats anything at all. So how do you make sure they get what they need when their eating is so erratic, or when vegetables end up in their noses and crayons seem to be the taste of the day? Nutrition for kids is actually less difficult than it seems. You’re probably on the right track right now – you just don’t know it.

Start with the basics

Now put away the measuring cup

Keep the guidelines in mind, but don’t worry about measuring every item of food that goes into your baby’s mouth. When preparing a meal or healthy snack for kids, just serve small portions of at least three food groups, and make sure that fruits and vegetables are the most represented. Also, try to serve a variety of foods over the course of the week, including one you know they like at every meal – it’ll make them much more inclined to eat.

After that, it’s all about averages. If you’re even moderately paying attention to your baby’s diet, they’ll eat enough of each nutrient naturally over time. If they didn’t eat an orange today, they’ll get their Vitamin C from a tomato or kiwi tomorrow. If you’re really are worried about your child not getting enough of any particular nutrient, see your pediatrician.

Bon appétit!

Mealtime with a toddler can be stressful enough without having to worry about nutrition. If you simply continue to offer a variety of healthy foods, you can relax and just focus on enjoying a pleasant meal with your family, even with your picky little eater.
