Bedding 101

Choosing your baby’s bedding can be a lot of fun. With the vast variety out there, it’s important when shopping to keep in mind that you’re looking for more than just comfort and aesthetics – you’re also looking for safety. Understanding the different kinds of baby bedding available and the purpose each one has is key. Once you have that sorted out, you can get creative.

Sheets

There are five sheet sizes to keep in mind; standard crib, portable crib, cradles, bassinets and play yards. While most sheets are 100% cotton, some come in a polyester/cotton blend. They’re also available in knit, flannel, and traditional woven styles. You’ll find colours and patterns to complement any nursery design.

Crib skirts

These sound pretty, and they are! Crib skirts, also known as dust ruffles, spread across the mattress support and under the actual mattress to hide the area under the crib – smart if you plan on using the space for storage. They also provide extra dust protection, especially for nurseries with hardwood floors.

Sheet savers

Also known as ‘good night sleep savers’, these rest above your crib sheets and protect them from permanent staining, They’re made from quilted, machine-washable material, and they absorb moisture to keep your little one comfortable. Look for sheet savers that can easily be tied to the crib bars.

Mattress pads

Similar to sheet savers, these pads are made from absorbent, quilted, machine-washable material. Some mattress pads come with sewn-in waterproof liners, while others come with a rubber backing to guard against stains. They are generally placed over the mattress and under sheets.

Swaddlers and wearable blankets

Swaddlers are appropriate for newborns as they mimic the snugness of the womb. They’re warm and also create a calming, familiar feeling. As babies grow, the need to swaddle them decreases, but other considerations come up. Developing the ability to roll over in the middle of the night is a big one because winding up on their stomachs can be dangerous. That’s where a wearable blanket has tremendous value. It too is warm, but it prevents them from using their legs as leverage to roll.
