I've always been scared to cut my babies fingernails in fear of cutting them. I did not use them in the dark while they were sleeping but during the day for some added light. The light was too bright and made it difficult to see his nails to make sure i didn't clip too far. I took it slow to cut them to make sure I didn't get any skin in it but with a wiggly child these did not work well. They were bulky and hard to see. For the newborn baby, the tiny size made it easy to clip and the lights helped see the tiny tails much clearer even in the day time. I found it much easier to see baby's nails than with the magnifier type of nail clipper (I originally thought it would be other way around!). For adults, its also very useful to get to the tiny dry skin pieces that get stuck next your nails and are hard to get to with regular adult nail clippers. I did not find the nail file useful for my newborn as her nails are so soft that they bend when using the file. However, I think it will be very useful later when her nails harden into regular nails. I did not have any of the product defect issues that some of the other reviews mentioned. The lights are bright and help to see the nail. That being said, my baby woke up every time I tried to clip his nails. So I had to do it when he was awake. These clippers are hard to use on a small baby's wiggling fingers and toes. Since the lights come all the way to the edge of the clippers, there's no good way to get the nail under the clippers. It is hindered by the lights. Unfortunately, these did not work well for my 7 month old. I finally found this to replace it - this is now my SECOND go round with the blue one. For some reason the blue is not made as well or something. The clipper handle is so tight, it feels like it is not seated well in it's spot -the first one broke off - while cutting a NEWBORN's fingernails! I returned that one - the new one is feeling the same way and the handle does not seat properly, causing the light to stay on or randomly come on.
