It comes in the box ready to use, with a battery inside already. The key feature of this digital thermometer is the age function, where you can choose the age range and it will tell you using green, yellow, or red whether the temperature is considered a fever for that age.I really like that this thermometer does the work for you in terms of telling you with colour coding whether the temperature is something to be concerned about. I also really like that it is a thermometer the whole family can use since it adjusts the colour signals based on age.I found the thermometer easy to use straight out of the box. Just press the On button, and select the age range, and it is ready to use. It took the reading in 8 seconds, which is considered fast for digital thermometers. When you have a squirming baby, every second counts when taking the temperature. I tried this on my toddler who is between 1-2 years old, and the flexible tip was comfortable enough that he let me hold it under his armpit long enough to take the reading. I think what could be improved is to make it more clear that the digital thermometer is for underarm readings only. Some other digital thermometers can be used to take oral or rectuum temperatures, and those readings differ in terms of what constitutes a &quot;normal&quot; range that is not a fever. When I first looked at the product, I looked all over the packaging to see how this one could be used. It was not until I opened and reviewed the insert that I could see it was for underarm only.Overall, I think this is a good option in terms of digital thermometers when it comes to families with varying age children. It is super easy to use and I do not really need to read the manual to figure out how to operate it. There is only one button which you use to select age of patient. Put it under your tongue or underarm to get your temperature. I put it in my mouth to test it out and results are ready in just in 8 seconds. Basically you just put it in and before you notice, the result is already ready. I would personally wipe it with rubbing alcohol after each use for hygiene reasons or you can rinse it in water as it is water resistant. The thermometer comes with a protective cap too. Temperate can be displayed in Celsius or Fahrenheit and there is a memory recall function for the last reading. Although the tip is soft and flexible, I do not recommend this thermometer for infants and young kids as it will be a challenge getting this under their tongue or underarm. At first glance, the thermometer itself is very simple. It's not overly big, but has a big display screen which makes it easy to read. It's very simple to turn on and select your age range. Just use the button with a person on it when the icon reaches your age range, and wait for the 3 lines. After that, it's easy to take the temperature under the arm or under the tongue. We tested it on a child and an adult. Both times it was a super quick reading and beeps as soon as you have a temperature. As soon as you pull it away, you get the colour associated with the body temperature. Green is normal, yellow is fever and red is high fever. The tip is flexible and comfortable compared to older models, which makes it easier to take a kid's temperature. I feel that if there is a fever, it would read it accurately and quickly.
