We bought it to protect the seat from our child's feet (mud, snow, etc) while rear-facing, and it gave us the bonus of helping our second car seat be more secure in a car where it had previously not fit as well. It protects the seat very well. The only drawback is that liquid (accidents or melting snow from boots) can still soak the seat via the holes for the car seat straps (which would be hard to avoid) and the seat back protector in our primary vehicle has worn through from all the friction of our child's feet. However, it has lasted more than a year of abuse from our child, and I'm glad it wasn't our car's seat instead.
