The new mechanism slips over the end of the piece that tightens the gate and it locks onto the end of the piece. It give me somewhat piece of mind. I like to put them in front of stairs and doorways if the door has stairs or if I want to block off the kitchen while the stove is hot or if the oven is hot . These gates are very handy. Some days when it's warm outside I can open the front door and put a gate blocking the doorway. They are also very very useful if u have dogs. I definitely recommend baby gates for kiddos and dogs. This gate has little groves so when u put it in the entry way and slide it open it locks and stays very secure. It's easy to take down but very child proof. The used to have wrapped wire mesh which they have swapped out to thin plastic lattice mesh that can break easily. It makes the gate much lighter but it does not give us much confidence. It is completely useless now. I am a stay at home mom with no income. I don't make purchases lightly, so something I have out of necessity breaking upsets me.
