My only critique is it does not have white noise AND the nature sounds are sort of jarring. The nature sounds are a variety of animals making noise and not just wind/water sounds. This toy is great as it has so many developmental benefits for your baby such as language development, auditory stimulation and visual awareness. This product is mostly soft, however the middle is hard plastic and has buttons so I would not recommend putting it with your baby. She entertains herself pressing the 4 various sound button options and seeing the lights displayed. I like that the hippo has volume and timer controls as well as auto sound detection that will come in handy when I have my next one. Surprisingly, the auto sound detection works quite well. It takes maybe 1-2 high pitch sounds for the hippo to auto play. There are quite a variety of soothing sound options including: 3 short nursery rhymes stories; 60 various lullaby and classical melodies; 5 nature sounds; as well as a combo option for both the nature sound and melody concurrently. I thought my 18 month old would be too old to use this hippo as a sound soother to fall asleep to, but I find she calms down and falls asleep to the melodies and the projector light show a lot quicker during her bedtime routine than before I had the hippo. The hippo&rsquo;s body has cutouts of a stars and a rocket ship scene which projects the image onto the wall or ceiling via the hippo&rsquo;s emitting light. I think there were 5-6 different color options to choose from. I love the compact nature of this hippo as it&rsquo;s easy to handle and since it&rsquo;s battery operated, I can essentially take it anywhere. It also doesn&rsquo;t hurt that it&rsquo;s cute to look at. Although I like the extensive variety in sound options this hippo offers, it was missing a few sound options that are typically standard with sound soothers. I have a five-year-old and a one-year-old and they are both afraid of the dark. I like that there are lights that come through the hippo they can be placed in the middle of the floor between the two beds. I also like the timers and I like the timers have a prolonged time when they are not just five minutes 10 minutes and 15 minutes it goes the highest at 45 minutes I believe. I like that you can change the colors and I like that you can also play music or nice soothing sounds to help the kids sleep at night. It&rsquo;s an added bonus because the one-year-old walks around with it all day as a play toy. This is this is a great item to have in the house especially when you have two guys that aren&rsquo;t the best at self soothing and have issues being in the dark that&rsquo;s why it is definitely a huge lifesaver. It's nice because when we have the air on in the room its hard to hear anything so being able to adjust the volume has been really nice. It wound up keeping my kids up longer than usual because of all the different buttons they could push. It also had too much variety for my one year old to use on her own. I did like the light option, and felt that it was a great addition to a bedtime soother. The colors are just the right amount of brightness to add a nice glow to a dark room, and my kids loved finding the rocket ships in the pattern. The music is good as well, and there is a nice variety in songs. I also like that a timer can be set, in order to help preserve battery life. Now for the downfalls. The story setting is just strange, and the reader's voice is too slow. My kids didn't seem to be a fan of it, and I felt that the product should have left this feature out. The nature sounds were OK, but the owl noises were too loud compared to the rest of the sounds. I also wish the volume control was hidden, because my kids insisted at playing it at full blast all night which could be heard from the next room over. Also, at times the toy randomly stops playing after just a couple of minutes. I'm not sure if this is a quality problem, or if the batteries are already dying after only 2 days. Either way, my kids wound up frustrated with it. Overall, the toy isn't terrible but would have been better with fewer buttons. My son is now 2 and still won't fall asleep without this thing. The best feature is that it turns on automatically if we wakes up in the night crying or calling out. He goes right back to sleep most of the time with the soothing music and lights on the ceiling. Love it!
